Well, it is quite long, but otherwise I would not call it particularly strenuous. I walked it in early August (HOT), but because I took an early start (around 6 am) it was OK even then. May should be an ideal time for Samaria.

And I walked it with my son who at that time was seven years old. Remember, it is not the length of the journey that kills, it is speed. Just walk leasurely, and take your time to rest and enjoy bird song, and you will be just fine.

It is a great hike and there were people of all ages. We even saw a couple of people with physical handicaps.
The hardest part is the first part. You will be going down seemingly thousands of steps and steep downward paths. But once you get to the bottom (and take lots of time to do so) the rest is extremely easy).

It's not a tough walk. The first km or so is straight down and after that it's quite easy. The first section is the xyloskala- the wooden stairs- and, as elina said, if you go at your own pace you won't find it hard.

People rush because at teh bottom you are in full sun, and flok try to get there before noon. Take a big hat, take your time (and don't forget to put sun cream on the BACKS of your legs)
