Salzkammergut Hotel recommendation?

In September, we have a short trip to Austria. After visiting Melk, we will have a car and want to spend two days in the Salzkammergut region, before heading to Salzburg. We hope to stay in one place for both nights. Fodorites have raved about Hallstatt, but would others recommend a moderate hotel elsewhere?

Stop in Hallstatt after you leave Melk and plan to spend several hours, but stay in St. Gilgen on the Wolfgangsee. Hotel Zur Post is good as is the Billroth.

Thanks for the hotel advice! We have returned from a week in Austria. We stayed two nights at Hotel Zur Post in St Gilgen. The room was great, clean and quiet. We also enjoyed a delicious dinner at the hotel. Also, easy to park at the hotel. The boat to St Wolfgang and the mountain train ride were wonderful. Unbelievable views from the mountain!
We would also recommend lunch in Mondsee at Hotel Lackner on the terrace. It was pricey for us, but the best meal of the trip and a beautiful view.

Hi globehopper - Did you see the miniature golf course in St Gilgen? A few of the "holes" were up on tables and the ball was hit with something which looked like a pool cue! My kids were dying to play, and I wished we could have stayed a few days rather than just passing through.

Have you looked at Hotel Fuerberg in St. Gilgen, it's on the lake with patios overlooking the lake, looks wonderful. www.fuerberg.at

OOPS, globehopper, I gave you a hotel recommendation and you're already back, sorry.

You say you had lunch at the Hotel Lackner, that was one of my choices to spend 4 nights but I read that the Mondsee area wasn't that nice, since you've been there what is your opinion. I emailed the hotel and all of their rooms have a balcony over the lake and reasonable rates, should I stick to my original hotel in St. Gilgen?
