Salzburg to Vienna-Suggestions for 4 days-via train only

Good Morning All!

DH and I are traveling with my parents and great aunt and great uncle...all in their mid to late 60's. During the last leg of the trip, after our tour of Germany, we leave them in Slazburg.

They will have 4 full days to travel between there and Vienna, and are looking for ideas. A mixture of country and city would be great. One idea is the underground lakes and caves outside of Vienna. (Near Hinterbruhl?) Any other ideas?

Hotels in convenient locations would be great to have also. This is the only part of the trip that hasn't been planned!

Thanks everyone!

Not sure....they stay in Salzburg at least on the 26th of Sept. They fly out of Vienna on the 1st. Everything else is up in the air....

Looking for ideas to plan this leg.

Konig von ungarn is one of Vienna's oldest hotels and Just behind the Cathedral on the main square. Very convienient.

Visiting Melk would be a very interest river cruise.

A little information on Vienna. www.inyourpocket.com/austria/vienna

Salzburg
to Hallstatt
to Vienna

all can be done by train - for lots about trains in Austria check out these IMO fantastic sources - www.seat61.com; http://www.budgeteuropetravel.com/id33.html and www.ricksteves.com.

Hallstatt is the epitome of a high up in the Alps resort town, lovingly set on a lake and surrounded by glacier-girdled high Alps - just a dreamy place for the country part your folks wish. By train Salzburg to Achtnang-Puchheim (sp?) then a wonderfully scenic train line to Hallstatt - the final leg is by boat across the lake to Hallstatt proper.

So...here is a possible itinerary:

Sept. 25th - Salzburg
Sept. 26th - Hallstatt
Sept. 26th - Hallstatt
Sept. 27th - ???
Sept. 28th - Vienna
Sept. 29th - Vienna

Any ideas for the leg between Hallstatt and Vienna?

Thanks everyone!

I'd add another night to either Salzburg or Vienna.
