Salzburg to Venice by car

Our family of 4 is planning to drive to Venice from Salzburg by car. We plan to spend 2 nights in/near Venice before continuing to Tuscany.

--According to mapquest, the drive is roughly 4.5 hours. Is this accurate?

--Is the drive scenic? We are also considering heading into Venice via Fussen, Germany

--Is there a convenient/inexpensive place to park the car for our duration in Venice?

Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions!

Via Füssen would be a huge detour. The direct drive from Salzburg to Venice goes over the Alps, so yes, it's scenic.

See other thread for my question on drop-off fees.

What time of year will you travel.

While I am usually a big fan of road trip through the Alps, these city-to-city trips are usually done more convenient by train. Otherwise you pay, besides gas and assuming you in Austria so the car got the motorway tax sticker already for tunnel tolls in Austria and motorway tolls in Italy. Plus the drop-off fee if you don't return to the country from where you rented. plus parking in Venice.

In addition, I would not say that the Tauern motorway is extremely scenic. Of course, you see the mountains but unless you plan to visit some sights here and there... I don't know.

If the aforementioned drop-off fee was not an issue and you had one full day in summer, you could take a very scenic route to Venice from Salzburg via Bad Reichenhall, Lofer, Saalfelden, Zell am See, Grossglockner Alpine Road, Heiligenblut, Lienz, Kötschach-Mauthen, Tolmezzo to Motorway A23 in Italy near Udine and further on to Venice.
