If it were me, and I had the time and money, I would do it, regardless of the weather (which, BTW, I couldn't tell you about). Take advantage of being over there to do all you can (within reason, of course). You might be able to find a good priced flight from Salzburg to Venice, so you wouldn't have to do the train thing.

I'd go to Venice, absolutely! I spent a week there in late November into December in 2005. The weather at the beginning of Dec was low 50's and rain. In spite of this, it was glorious. There were no crowds and the entire tempo of the city is relaxed. Venice is beautiful whatever the weather... and she haunts my dreams.

Hi R,

I would, whatever the weather.
You can fly Salzburg to Milan/Bergamo for about 89E on airberlin.
The 01:38 night train arrives in Venice San Lucia at 08:45.

You didn't say how you were traveling. If you have a car, the drive down to Venice through the Dolomites in winter is spectacular. I have even been in Venice when it snowed, and it was still wonderful. Sounds like a great trip. You will love Christmas in Salzburg!

Husband just returned from Germany. We drove from Munich to Rothenburg, then down to the Fussen area. From there we drove to near Prien where we stayed for 5 nights visiting Salzburg and the surrounding area. From Prien area we drove to Venice for 3 nights. This took us, with a couple of stops, about 6 hrs. The scenery was beautiful.
We would definitly advise doing Venice!
PS: We put 1686 mi/2714km on the car. We did have a navigation system in the car.
