Given the mountain terrain, the actual 3G connection to the mobile networks which the train has to use is not always there in sufficient quality. But usually better than if you logged on to 3G with your device without the train's WiFi. So it does help a little to stay connected.
You can't use train WiFi to watch online videos or such but checking e-mails or other low bandwidth stuff like exchanging instant messages usually works sooner or later.

We are here and loving the freedom of having our rental car. We are thinking of keeping it and driving from Salzburg to a Swiss/German border town with a Hertz drop off location. Then in Switzerland begin thw the train portion off our trip. Anyone know where I should target?

Lindau would be a good bet - big town on Lake Constance and you can take a train thru a few miles of Austris to Buchs SG - the Swiss border station where your Swiss Pass if you have one would kick in - or from Lindau take a train to Frede3rikshaven (sp?) and a boat across the Boden See to Switzerland - Swiss Pass would I think cover half of the boat - a little longer that way but oh so much more interesting and romantic with the boat ride.

Constance - the largest town on the Boden See should have a Hertz office and then you just cross the river to enter Switzerland - but if Lindau don't have a Hertz office then just take the train to Zurich Airport or Zurich or some other large town that does.

When we checked rental prices it was about 1000 euro for a small car for the day from Salzburg. Crazy!!! We took the train and 9 hours, 4 trains, 3 connections, and 20 euros of snacks we are here!!! Made it to Grindelwald with enough time to take in the insany gorgeous views before dark!!! Wow!!!! Can't wait to explore! What to do first?!?!?
