cities - big cities especially can be tiring but a sojourn on the lakes can be so relaxing - take short boat trips or bus rides or train rides to several close by places - easy to get there from Salzburg by postal bus and buses and boats once there.

Budapest is about probably 5 hours by train from Salzburg.

Budapest and Bratislava (only an hour from Vienna by train) are neat old cities but IMO the Lakes do not involve as much travel and there are few 'musts' to be seen except the wonderful lakes and mountains hemming them in.

What are you doing before these three days and after?

For some info on trains and postal buses check www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

will you be driving or taking public transportation - cars are a boondoggle in large cities - useless with parking may be hard to find, etc. Cars should be no problem in the Lake District(a k a Sound of Music Country).

Only been to the lakes (Salzkammergut). I'd look to stay at a farm or cozy pension on or near the Wolfgangsee (maybe St. Gilgen?). Sightseeing can be relaxing and very picturesque using the lake ships that cruise to different towns and villages on the Wolfgangsee. Salzburg would also be a short, maybe 40 minute, drive or bus away.

Agree with Salzkammergut Lakes. Plenty to do with or without a car. We love St. Gilgen and the Hotel Schernthaner. Have stayed there at least a half dozen times. The owner, Frau Eisl, always treats everyone like family.

the Lake District yes is so so relaxing - no major museums or churches you HAVE to see - take some boats or the steam train up the mountain behind St Wolfgang and chill!
