Salzburg/Halstatt/Werfen itinerary help
I am traveling with my boys around Austria/germany this summer! We will be taking a train to Salzburg and we have 3-4 nights to spend in this area before heading to Munich. I would like to do the Ice caves and castle near Werfen. Halstatt looks beautiful also. Would it be best to rent a car and travel to these towns so we can explore more of the Lake District? We could set up home base in Salzburg too and do day trips but I am not always a fan of the staying in the bigger cities. I could go either way on that one since it is a central hub.
Any advice is welcome!

Hallstatt is easy enough to reach via public transport - bus, train and ferry. We did this once from St Giglen in the Salzkammergut.
This blog explains how:

Keep in mind that Hallstatt is a tourist magnet, especially with the Chinese. It will be anything but peaceful.
Salzburg doesn't feel all that big to me, and it's easy to navigate on foot and by bus, but if you're not intersted in visiting it's many attractions, you could always base in the Salzkammergut - St Gilgen, St Wolfgang, or Strobl.
Either way, I think you'll find that your 3-4 nights will fly by. Three nights is only two full days, so two day trips will eat up all your time.
Werfen can be reached from Salzburg by train in about 40 minutes. Details on how to reach the ice caves here:
