Salzburg/Halsett

We are traveling to Vienna in 2 weeks. We plan on a day trip to Salzburg. Would it be worth it to plan an additional daytrip to the Halsett area. If so, does the train go there, and how long of a trip is it from Vienna. We prefer the vista to the museums...romantic villages, lake areas,etc...thanks for any input..

Julie, Hallstatt is well worth a day trip. We learned about it from an employee at the Austrian Tourist Bureau who lived in the area. Do the salt mine tour also. We were based in Salzburg and drove there for a day trip so couldn't tell you about train or hotel. Enjoy your trip!!!

I wouldn't just stop at Hallstat. There are many other beautiful and romantic villages in the Salzkammergut area. We stayed in Grundlsee for a week, and although there wasn't much of a village, found the area extremely beautiful. Bad Ausse, Bad Ischel, St. Wolfgang, Bad Goisern were all extremely beautiful and romantic towns. I would try to spend a couple of days in that region.

We recently took a train from Salzburg to Hallstatt then on to Melk and to Vienna, staying 2 nights in both Hallstatt and Melk. The train service is great-however it is helpful to know German as you have to change trains and it is often confusing to find the right track for the connecting train. Also for the Hallstatt train only the last four cars went there, we were glad we had asked. That said, go to Hallstatt if possible, it was one of the highlights of our trip!

Another interesting point, besides what has been given, is that your train to Hallstatt doesn't arrive at Hallstatt. Instead, it arrives across the lake, and from there you can take a boat or catch a ride around the lakeshore to Hallstatt.

All of us responding have assumed your "Halsett" is really Hallstatt. From Vienna all the way to Hallstatt, you should allow 4-5 hours.
