SALZBURG

We will be travelling in the Salzburg region for 2-3 nights this summer. Any suggestions on places to visit particularly outside the city? Nice places for a short hike/walk (we'd probably be backpacking a todder)? Places to stay and eat? We'll have a car.
Thanks!
Please please take the short drive to the Konigsee. There you can take a boat ride with stunning scenery and some wonderful short hikes. The pictures we took here elicited the most "ooohs and ahhhhs" I've ever heard. Drop me a line if you'd like more info.

Yes, Koenigsee is very beautiful. On your way from Salzburg to Koenigsee you'll pass the Gasthaus Kugelmuehle ( about halfway between the German border and Berchtesgaden ) at the entrance of the Almbachklamm gorge. Here you can enjoy a meal or a beer, or you can stroll through the gorge.

Or drive to St. Gilgen at the Wolfgangsee and walk along the lake shore ( clockwise ) towards the quaint bay of Fuerberg where you'll find a restaurant or, somewhat further, some nice places to have a picnic or to take a swim. You can return to St. Gilgen by boat.

Another short trip from Salzburg is the drive to the top of the Gaisberg. Enjoy the view, then drive down to the Zistelalm where you can enjoy a meal and/or a short walk.

Finally, don't miss Hellbrunn castle and its beautiful park.

Happy travels !

Regards, Jochen

Diana - If you are looking to stay in a small town may I suggest Ramsau.
(www.berchtesgaden.de) I have stayed at Gasthof Oberwirt, IM TAL 86-94, 83486 Ramsau. They are not on the Web but you can write them , fax or phone. Large rooms with huge modern bathrooms for DM 62 per person for a double room includes breakfast. They also have a restaurant for lunch and dinner. Phone 08657/225 or fax 08657/1381 (english is spoken) I have just made our reservations for May and look forward to again visiting the area. Happy Travels - Tom

Saltzburg is so great, I regret we didn't spend more time there. We based it on people saying it was so crowded, congested, etc. If you are from a city like New York City, than you will appreciate the beauty of Saltzburg.
So much to see, but much smaller, cleaner and older. I wish I had more time to spend in Saltzburg.
