OK - finally we have it narrowed down to Goldenen Ente, the Gablerbrau and Trumer Stube. Could you pleae give me your thoughts and then I will finally book one of these. It feels good to have gotten this far. My husband won out - he wants to stay right in Salzburg and these fit the budget. They all seem nice to me so I'm sure we can't go wrong, but I value the opinions here so please help one more time - positives and negativeP.S. What's a troll?

A troll is a person - - or the message(s) posted by that person - - whose chief purpose is to incite argumentative and contentious replies.. to "draw in" the "fish", with bait... like a trawling angler does.
The "best" of trolls are frequently hard to distinguish from highly naive, ignorant, uninformed, prejudiced or simply stupid questions.
Best wishes,
Rex

Hi Kwren:
We stayed at the Trumer Stube as a result of a recommendation from the Pension Petsky(?)in Vienna three years ago. I probably would not stay there again for several reasons. Number 1. The notes posted everywhere i.e. we do not take credit cards, do not leave the lights and TV on in your room, in case of an emergency leave the hotel run down to the corner of the street and telephone the number posted. 2. The mornings were greeted with a very sour gentleman, forgot his name but he is the Italian husband of one of the ladies behind the desk. 3. We also felt that the breakfast was quite meager and he hovered over the buffet, we felt like we should not touch anything (maybe one of the notes should have said eat one egg only). One morning we were banished from our seats because the Italians were coming and they needed to sit as a group. The Italians had not shown up by the time we left. 4. There was no night porter or attendant. One evening our lock became jammed on the inside of the door which we managed to open but could not get back into the room on our return. We had to make that call at the pay phone and wait for grumby husband to fix it. My partner was very concerned that without access to a telephone inside the room and the possiblity of being trapped for a period of time made him feel uneasy. 5. My partner is generously proportioned in terms of weight and to get in and out of the shower in the closet cum bathroom he literally had to open the door to move around the sink. That's probably more his fault than the bathroom's but I digress. Bonus, it was just a short walk to the center of Salzburg and price was reasonable.
Hope this helps.
Denise

Wow Denise...I had read about the "breakfast nazi" (as someone had put it) and was willing to put up with that, but these other things certainly give me pause. Thanks so so much for your input.
Any others?

I haven't stayed at any of these 3 as we generally stay outside of the city. However, I have eaten at the Goldener Ente restaurant and it was excellent. This location is great, right in the inner "aldstadt" area. Pix of the Gablerbrau are not so appealing...
