Salzberg hotels

We are looking for hotel suggestions for Salzberg. Years ago we stayed at the Goldener Hirsh. This time we are looking for something less "grand", but still high quality and well located. Does anyone have experience with Alstadhotel Wolf-Dietrich?

I was going to answer your question by saying that I have loved staying at the Wolf, before you had mentioned it.

It was a great location in the old town and the staff was wonderful. I love the alpine floors and furniture, and my feather mattress was the best nights sleep I had ever had. As soon as I got home, I bought one!
If you have transportation, stay in nearby Berchtesgaden. It's cheaper, prettier and only a few minutes away by car. There are tons of Gasthofs and inexpensive, but nice, hotels in Berchtesgaden.

You do mean SalzbUrg in Austria? If you are driving why not stay in Hallstatt? It is fabulous and not that far to Salzburg. The Lake District of Austria is most beautful and Hallstatt is only one of many small villages on the lakes.

I just returned from Salzburg and would highly recommend the Hotel Stieglbrau ($122/night). I'm not sure if this fits your "less grand" criteria, but the people there were extremely nice and accommodating to our every need. The rooms were large and air conditioned. It is conveniently located if you are traveling by train. It was a short walk to the train station or to the Marribelle Gardens. Regardless of where you stay, have a great time. I loved Salzburg!!

We stayed in the Spring at the Elefant, on a quiet street three minutes from the Hirsh. It had a good restaurant and was not as expensive as the Hirsh. They had different rates for different size rooms and the hotel was small and very friendly. It had an excellent breakfast and of course the location was great.
