S Bahn ticket question

2 people staying in Unterschleissheim for 4 nights.
What’s the best train ticket to buy to get to central Munich and back?
I see there’s 2 kinds of adult multi journey tickets that cost 14 euros. One has a U21 in the name what does that mean?

There will be a new fare system from December 2019 on.
Assuming that you travel before that date, you can get either
1) two 7 day passes for "7 rings" for €32.60 per person, or
2) four München XXL Group Day Tickets for €16.10 per day
Either way, you'll pay around €64 altogether.

It is a bit tricky to get weekly passes from the machines (the Metropolitan Munich fare system is notoriously complicated), so you may find the München XXL Group Day Tickets easier to get.

Depending on the type of ticket machine, any ticket may need to be validated. Some machines offer the option of already validating the ticket. When in doubt, just stamp it.

If you plan to go elsewhere but Munich (i.e. day trip to other places in Bavaria) on one of those days, you can get a Bayern Ticket for that day. Which will also cover Munich local transport, like the S-Bahn, subways, trams and buses.

U21 tickets.. means tickets for under 21 year old.

Do the first 2 options you mentioned give unlimited travel in the covered rings?

What is the 14 euro streifenkarte good for? Is that one person round trip? What do they mean by 4 stubs?

Yes, the options I mentioned are for unlimited travel in those rings or zones for the whole time of the respective duration.

The "Streifenkarten" or strip card is for single rides.
Each card has ten segments, and you stamp the number of segments you need for each trip.
Each fare zone requires two segments.
As Unterschleißheim is in Zone 2 and Munich is in Zone 1, you need to stamp 4 segments.
So one ride would cost 4 x €1.40 = €5.60 per person.
The return trip would cost again €5.60 per person.
So, two people traveling from Unterschleißheim to Munich and back pay €22.40 altogether.
Compare with the cost for the München XXL Group Ticket for €16.40.
And: The Group Ticket includes also any other rides you may want to do in fare zones 1+2 to get from A to B during that day.

In a nutshell:
The Streifenkarte makes absolutely no sense for two or more people making return trips to/from Munich from fare zones 2,3 or 4.

Cowboy1968,

Thanks for clarifying that for me.

I wonder why the München XXL Group Ticket doesn't show up as an option in the DBNavigator App.

I guess I will purchase from machine.

As a person who is completely freaked out when trying to figure out either long distance or in town train/tram systems (since we don't live in an area in the States that has much of a local transport system) I find it so nice of those of you who know and understand your local systems to provide such generous advice. It certainly can be baffling to try to figure it out on your own.
