The Guardian reports that due to soaring cost of fuel RyanAir will start charging 16 pounds for each checked bag - to offset fuel costs and deter passengers from overloading the plane.
so it may soon cost more to check your bag on RyanAir than the cost of the flight itself

And if you want to check-in at a counter and not a machine, it's an extra 8 quid for that as well.

Apparently ALL "other costs" at the airline companies are under complete control and have already been "reduced" as much as possible.

Well they are rumor has it installing pay toilets onboard - hoping again folks will travel lighter by unloading before boarding

pps Ryanair's policy on checked in baggage is direct costing at its best - I regularly fly Manchester to Palma with a laptop and rucsac - why should I subsidise 350lb Fat Johnny with his 5 cases and 5 wobbly kids who are stuffed with McD's.

Charge by weight of the passengers like they do on the small airlines in the Bahamas I say - fatties pay up.

I suggest the airlines charge for every single laptop computer, every purse, every backpack, etc., that comes aboard.

Why should I pay for these people who think they simply HAVE to bring all their worldly goods onto the plane and simply HAVE to play with their laptop.

I was not necessarily condemning the move - given the Ryan Air is still relatively a good bargain - just found it amusing that checking a bag could cost more than the flight

and really by spreading the costs to those who yes weigh more as a package with baggage and body weight makes perfect sense to me - a user fee

As an addendum, I am sure the airlines CEOs are making every cent of their salaries plus their compensations and golden parachute packages, right?

we're venturing onto Ryanair for the first time this summer.

we're allowed 15kgs each for hold luggage with "no pooling". I had to explain to DS that that meant you can't add a 14kg bag to a 16 kg bag - NOT that we each have to have only our own belongings in each bag.

Utter bollocks, Rynarair won't have pay toilets on board as it costs too much to install the slot for the penny

INSTEAD you have to book number 1s & 2s when you make the booking otherwise you will be able to do it at the airport (but for twice the cost).

There will be no refund on unused number 1s & 2s - and pooling of number 1s is not allowed

Most airlines are revamping their baggage policies. The US carriers as well as Air Canada are now only offering 1 free bag with a second to be checked at an additional fee of 25.00. This is for travel within the USA and Canada but may soon be expanded to other destinations. If you're paying full fare or business class, you'll be exempt from the extra fee.

With the cost of fuel, it's just one more way of raising money without putting the sticker price up too much. They can still advertise the rock bottom fares...then add fuel surcharges, taxes, food for purchase, seat selection fees for some and now extra baggage fees. That 199.00 ticket actually cost you 700.00.

I'm travelling Ryanair to portugal from stanstead this summer and i wanted some help from everyone...

i dont plan on checking in baggage whilst flying out from london but the hand baggage allowance is 10 kgs...are they really that anal? will they make me weigh the hand luggage?

secondly i am flying out from seville to bergamo and then to london (all on ryanair) and i wanted to know is the rest of the EU as strict - i.e. will i only be allowed 1 pc of hang luggge? or do u think i can get away with 2?
just not sure if i should book a pc of luggae to check in b/c i know on the way back i'll have lotsa stuff and souvernirs!

They will definitely weight your hand luggage.

I do not particularly like Ryanair but I use them a lot. You have to know the rules and if you remove the insurance fee where appropriate,you check-in on-line, carry on board the amount amount allowed,check in no luggage and buy nothing on board you can get great value.Otherwise they will get many euros off you. Read instructions carefully before buying your ticket.Remember too that they are a point to point airline and if you decide to fly from some small airport in Europe to Dublin or Shannon to get processed by American immigration before flying to America you should allow extra time in case you miss your connection.

You can have two pieces of hand baggage even in London. At least, that says Stansted airport website.
The prohibition was levied in April.
