I don't know if this is the kind of company you want, but I got my visa for St.Petersburg through Red Star Travel in Seattle. I was really impressed with their efficiency and helpfulness.

I had been trying to get a visa through the Russian consulate visa office and was having a hard time. I called Red Star, and they did the job for me.

If and when I visit St.Petersburg again, I will certainly go through Red Star.

Are you fully committed to taking a tour? Many of us have found it surprisingly easy to visit these places independently.

If you need assistance from a tour company based in Russia, PM me, will be more then happy to help with your tour planning. By the way, private tour will be expensive. If you want to save budget, I better suggest either to join a group from your country or book individual services in Russia, i.e. join a group city tour/Peterhof/Pushkin in English (and the rest explore on your own).

I keep seeing the Viking River Tours but have no first-hand knowledge. The Hermitage is on my list so I'm very interested in any info.

BTW, I think there are a couple of trip reports on Fodors about this.

We took a Grand Circle River tour Moscow to St. Petersburg in 2010, and it was a great introduction to Russia and the two cities for first timers. Our fellow passengers were interesting and curious about the culture.
