"Methinks you have to be a club member to start stupid threads."

Obviously not!

(That was meant as humor, Zeus, in case you couldn't tell.)

>I want everything to be perfect, ...<

Ay, there's the rub.

For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin?

Harrumph!

I had to go and find out the real words of that poem.
All I could remember was the line about tame and shabby tigers.

Anyway, I went to http://tinyurl.com/24up25
The Oxford Book of English Verse
and there it was!

The Bells of Heaven by RALPH HODGSON

’Twould ring the bells of Heaven
The wildest peal for years,
If Parson lost his senses
And people came to theirs,
And he and they together
Knelt down with angry prayers
For tamed and shabby tigers,
And dancing dogs and bears,
And wretched, blind pit ponies,
And little hunted hares.

Hey Fidel,
I'm not a total idiot although I sometimes play one on Fodor's.

Amazingly, I do realize that I am on a message board, but somewhere in this thread the context of the post made it sound more like a core group of regulars. Just making a point that obviously didn't come across as planned.

And as far as white gloved hands folded on the table...hardly not. I'm sitting at my laptop in my PJ's, barefoot amused that I seem to now be in the category of "complianer". I do appreciate all the help and advice I've gotten on this board. Since I've only been posting for a few months, I did not have the same reaction to the OP as some of the rest of you. I have observed what IMHO seems unnecssarily harsh wording on some posts. I obviously don't recognize trolls and travel agents and the like as some of you oldtimers do. (Oh heavens...what an utterly non-PC comment! I didn't really mean oldtimers; how about more experienced posters.)

Whatever...I'll call a truce. But just remember that people percieve things differently. I was playing devil's advocate.

Well, my dear duke158, you are a newbie here also. gametogo came on board with more insulting acid than any post I have ever seen, including the pre-registration days at Fodor's when it was really wild here.

Some folks are downright rude . . .s/he says!!! Looking in the mirror I suspect.

Okay, first of all, Zeus could not be more off base. His post is a parody of some fictitious message board. I can't tell you how many helpful posts I've seen where seasoned travellers help a novice get to the top of the Eiffel Tower, or achieve success at some such "touristy" enterprise. And walkinaround can always be depended on to defend America against phillistinism.

As for the OP, I can't agree with his approach, but there is some truth to what he says. There's the poster who thinks his singular succinctness in answering is endearing, but it comes across as obnoxious. There's the the one who used to bait Fodorites with bizarre what-would-you-do scenarios to show how intellectually superior he is to the rest of us or who liked to sneer at others perceived linguistic Faux pas. And then there's the particular Brit who, although he has toned things down lately, is capable of sending a sensitive American running for the hills with his ascerbic sense of humor. (I've actually started enjoying his posts of late.)

And yes it's clubby here. Perhaps I'll be around long enough to have cocktails with the A-list Fodorites (Mimi, Scarlett, ThinGorjus and others). I make a great tapenade.

But for the most part, it's a helpful, kind bunch of people here gametogo. Weed out the bad and accept the good. That's life.

I've been following this board daily for years..I mostly lurk but occasionally post. For me Fodor's is the best travel message board out there. It's nice to know there are other folks who have the same passion for planning and independent travel as we do. In my view the so called regulars are very helpful, polite, and informative (the posts on how to save money on car rental CDW and cell phones is worth the price of admission alone).

Having said all that a poster can risk a less than positive responses if they ask questions that are out of character for the board (Will I be cute in Rome?) or don't do research on questions first.

DickM,
The answer to "will I be cute in Rome" should be easy...the question really is "are you cute now"?

Hit post too soon...and yes I agree that those questions seem a little silly for a travel forum.

We don't live in a perfect world....

I've been to just about every travel board in cyberspace and for its few flaws...I have found the most indepth information on the Fodors site. Slow Travel also has a nice site but not quite as much activity....useful information none the less.

For the amount of activity on the board, these incidents that you mention are not a constant concern. CERTAINLY NOT THE MAJORITY.

gametogo...I don't really understand why you would do the very thing that you accuse these so called regulars of doing. You haven't been back since your initial rant so I assume you will continue to quietly extract the information from the board that you need without any real participation. That's ok because it serves no purpose to have you participate if you start on the offensive and don't give the MAJORITY the chance to answer your specific questions.

It is hard to beleive someone started a post in such a negative way. I think he/she is the pompous one!

I for one will not lift a finger either to help this person plan a trip.

As a poster who has been blamed for being "rude and pompous" more than once around here, let me state something.

Sometimes just clarifying the obvious or questioning a poster can be called rude. Just a week ago, I made the mistake of posting that I thought a thread was "funny" and questioned the reasoning behind the decision made within it. It seems someone posted about renting a wonderful apartment at a "fabulous" resort in Florida at a special price of $40 a night. He knew it was a time share and questioned if this were "too good to be true". One poster, and then later about three more posted that they had done this offer and there was literally NO pressure from the sales. In fact, they all said he should go for it. The poster went to Trip Advisor and found many similar posts. But then he posted back to say that he had decided that it wouldn't be worth it since they didn't want to be pressured, and a couple of the trip advisor reviews had mentioned that service was exactly perfect. HUH? I questioned after receiving the personal posts that there was literally NO pressure, and surely he knew the service wouldn't be "perfect" for $40, that it seemed funny he wasn't going through with this "deal" considering the answers he had received.

I got raked over the coals for my rudeness. I had no right to question his decision. Why should he have to justify his decision to me "of all people"? My posts are ALWAYS rude. Again, huh? I often post 100 or more times a day just offering simple and direct and often detailed answers to all kinds of questions. For anyone to even suggest that ALL my answers are rude is about as rude and incorrect as any post here can get. Did I suggest he was stupid? Did I even suggest he was making a horrible mistake? No. I merely asked what would have prompted such a "funny" decision after the responses he had received. That was being RUDE.

I think some people are just too thin skinned. When you post anything on the web, you are setting yourself up for some questioning. That's just a fact of life. When you ask for advice, are given it, and then turn around and make a decision that seems to say "I don't believe you" to the people who have attempted to help you, then yes, you can probably expect to get questioned on it, and even receive some "rude" comments.

And frankly, yes, you will see some rude answers from me. In this thread alone there are a couple. So? I really don't mind being rude -- in fact I sort of enjoy it -- WHEN it is in response to a post as rude as this one was. When some racist posts post after post trying to stir up racial comments, then yes, I tend to post some rude comments. Do I think I've overstepped my bounds? NO. I think considering the posts, I have every right to call a racist on being a racisit.

gametogo, barring one or two odd posts over the last couple months (since I have been here planning my trip), I have nothing but good things to say about people here. In fact, it is almost addictive.

Have fun.

That's going a bit far isn't it, NP?

I hope that I'm not being clubby.

This board has always been a great help to me. Where else can you get specific directions, ie, turn right then left and the third building enter through the blue door? No where. But if you ask "what is the BEST way to get from A to Z" then watch out.

This board has been invaluable to me and my family on trips. The information is correct and up to date. Trip reports are helpful and sometimes hilarious. So many give personal insights and advice that you simply could not get anywhere else.

So you get the occasional snide remark, I'm not perfect either. But to the rest of you, thank you for all your help.

Quite "interesting" Zeus..dare I add the dreaded LOL. It was funny.

I don't always think posters are ignoring advice when they don't take some of the suggestions offered, but perhaps they don't frame the response well. If it were me, I would thank the posters that offered opinions and tell them that I had weighed their suggestions.....hopefully that would be true...and explain that after some cosideration, I had elected to do "such and such". However, there always seems to be those that get offended or keep pushing...from either side.

I love joining in on threads like this.

Ever see that scene in Dr. Strangelove where Slim Pickins rides the nuke?

It'll all be over soon, but what a ride while it lasts. Yee haw!
