Rouen as a base for Normandy & Mont St. Michel tours

We did this trip a few years ago and ended up staying in Honfleur,then Bayeaux and then an actual night on Mont St Michel before heading over to Brittany.It worked out well as we could concentrate on each area without having to drive all the way back.
You must go to Caen to the the museum there as it is fabulous and really is helpful for a better understanding of the Normandy beaches and what happened no matter what your age is!

Thank you all for comments about Caen & Bayeux. We will definitely rent a car while in Normandy. Will give it some
more thought as to which of these 2 cities to stay as a base.
We are not going till Sept.2014, so still in early stages of
planning. We have a good friend who lives part-time in Paris
and will be our private & free guide in Paris & Normandy.
We only have 14 days to spend in France, and the 2 MUSTS for
our group are Paris and the Normandy beaches. So how to divide
our time for our first trip to France? We were thinking about
trying to squeeze in Bordeax wine country as well, but I think due to the travel time, maybe we should just do 10-11 days in Paris and 3-4 days in Normandy. I realize we will only scratch the surface in Paris, but there is so much to see
in Normandy as well, and I think a combination of the countryside & coasts there will be a nice contrast to the city
experience in Paris.

I would still spring for an organized tour of WWII sites in Normandy and pay your friend's way for that as thank you for her assistance.
I did a similar trip to Paris and Normandy with my then 14 year old son and it was a good taste of both locations. We spent a night in Rouen, two nights near Bayeau and two nights in Honfleur. We toured Rouen, visited the museum in Caen, toured Bayeau, took a day long tour of the US WWII sites in Normandy, and then enjoyed Honfleur and other towns in the vicinity. Definitely not enough time but a good first visit.
Nine to ten days in Paris is easy to fill and never get bored. I love Musee quai Branly, Musee Nissim de Camondo and Musee Jaquemart Andre in Paris. I also recommend wandering various parks in Paris for their variety of garden designs and people watching. The Jardin du Luxembourg is my favorite first day spot in Paris.
