We stayed the Hotel Reichs-Kuechenmeister; it was reasonable (not super cheap), very convenient to walk to the in town sites and ships, and we enjoyed a 2-room "family room" in one corner of the hotel. The other place that is considered the top hotel in Rothenburg is the Eisenhut. But I have no firsthand experience with it.

At Christmas we stayed at the Gasthaus Butz which is half a block from the central Platz. It's behind the touristy shops and very quiet. We had a huge room for 2 adults and 2 kids at 160 DM. Of course it included a nice breakfast. Be sure to take the Night Watchman's tour which leaves at 8:00 pm from the central Platz. Very interesting.

We always stay at the Reichs Kutchenmeister. Great location, good restaurant and nice wine stube. I also ditto on the Night Watchman tour. The Reichs Kutchenmeister is about a one minute walk from the Rathaus Square for departure on the walking tour. If you need fax number for Reichs, email me. At Christmas time this year we had a room with great view down the street . Price was also about 160DM.
Hi Pat

If you will be driving, you should consider staying at the Romantik Hotel Greifen Post in Feuchtwangen. It is one of our favorite places to stay in Germany. It is not far from Rothenberg and also near the little town of Dinkelsbuhl. If you will be travelling during July, try to be in Dinkelsbuhl during the time that the town reenacts the children saving the town from being taken over by the Swedes. We were there during the parade, and it was delightful.

Bon Voyage!

Carol
Hi Pat,
Have you checked out Karen Browns guide to charming inns and itineries? She recommends some very good hotels - both small and large, cheap and expensive. We stayed at the Hotel Klosterstuble from her guide and were delighted with the place. Her descriptions are spot on. She has a website so you could look up on there although abbreviated info to the book. www.karenbrown.com I think. I agree with the nightwatchmens tour - started at 8pm in the market place - good fun. Rothenburg is beautiful.

We have also stayed at the Reichs-Kuechenmeister. The best thing about it besides the great view we had, was the wonderful whirlpool and sauna! After a long flight, I thought it was heaven! I second the suggestion of using Karen Brown. We are leaving Thursday for germany and in the past two years have used her suggestions 11 times for hotels in Germany. We have yet to be disappointed. I love her guide books, she makes you want to stay in each place she recommends. If you are traveling around southern Germany, check out Hotel Braurerie Aying, a wonderful brewery about 12k outside of Munich. Although it is in the sticks, people come from all over to eat the wonderful food and sample the great beer. Also, near Fussen, our favorite hotel in all of Germany is Burghotel Falkenstein on the very top of the alps. Both of these are in K.B. Have fun,
Lori

We stayed at the Hotel Hornburg which is a 100 year old villa converted into a family run B&B. It was highly recommended by this forum and it was fantastic! Our room was comfortable and charming, big with stained glass windows with a lovely alcove overlooking the walled town and fruit laden trees of the villa garden. The couple who run it are very helpful. Their two golden labs who are sprawled on the front carpet of the reception are very cute. The breakfast is huge and most of all, it is next to the old town and has ample parking as well. The price was under US$ 100. If we ever went back, it would be to the Hornburg.
