I visited only once and withOUT a guide, but with REALLY good printed material, which brought it to life for me. I hope that one day, you see it in a way that makes sense to you!

kja - so do I! I have to say that I'm not very good at reading while I'm touring [i have to read a bit, look, read a bit more, etc] so audio-guides or better still live ones are much better for me.
I know that Walter here used to post wonderful descriptions of the Forum but sadly I never got my act in gear enough to print them off in time for any of my visits to Rome.
