Sorry I can't help about Alitalia. I book them all the time and never think about it. If there is a better flight (in terms of my schedule) offered by RyanAir or Air Dolomiti or Volotea, I book that.
Unless you are traveling at Easter (when is that?) then you are not going to have a lot of problems booking another flight if you book Alitalia now & they call you in March/April and tell you they are going out of business, and here's your money back. Leaving Palermo last time, I flew out of Trapani airport. It's not that far from Palermo. You really have a lot of options.
There will never be a time when Palermo doesn't have flights coming into it from Rome multiple times daily. (Well, at least not in the foreseeable future.)

Dayle, it's been a tough year here. Although I'm walking well after a big accident, the cost of months of rehabilitation was draining. I still want to make it out west.
annhig, American only provides lounge access at FCO if one has a same day departing ticket; not us. Lounge Buddy sells access for $33 per person for 3 lounges at FCO. Only two have showers. I'll keep this in mind for when I actually know which airline will be flying out on and the terminal. I may not know these things until after the first of the year. There doesn't seem to be any news on Alitalia.
