I would strongly recommend staying in Ortygia/Siracusa rather then Taormina. Ortygia is charming, Taormina has great views but is tourist/cruise ship central.

For the Sicily part of your trip, the locals—including the exceptionally knowledgeable Vagabonda—who post on the TripAdvisor Sicily forum will have a lot of current information.
