Rome to Palermo and hotels

We are flying from Atlanta into Rome in July at 8:55 am. I am trying to get a flight to Palermo that same morning. So far all I can come up with is 10:50 am or after 3pm. What would you guys suggest? Is 10:50 am (2 hours if 1st flight is on time) way to short of a layover or do you think we could make it? My travel partner hates the extremely long layover the afternoon flight would give us; but I don't think a 2 hour layover is enough time to get luggage, get through customs, and make it to the 2nd flight.

Also we need to find a hotel in Palermo that is in a good location to walk to the city sites and also not to far of a walk from the train. We will want to take the train for day trips. Any suggestions? We would like to try and stay around $150 a night if possible.

Thanks

I've done 8:55 arrival, 10:50 departure to Palermo - twice!

But get out of the international terminal where you arrive as soon as possible, take the sidewalk and walk to the left and you'll get to the national terminal a lot faster than if you follow the directions with various ups and downs on escalators, etc.

It is a risk, though, since the discount airlines - AirOne and WindJet - do sometimes change their schedules, although most often to later rather than earlier. And they have no-refund policies.

I'm surprised that there isn't another flight before 3:00 p.m. Maybe you should Google and check out AirOne and WindJet again.

There's a three-star hotel on Via Roma within a few minutes from the train station where the airport bus arrives that comes fairly well recommended: Hotel Ambasciatori. It should be within your budget. Almost everything is walkable in Palermo.

We flew to Rome on US Air & then the morning Air One to Palermo. Our luggage was checked through to Palermo. Our bags were not on the carousel in Palermo. We reported this and they took us to another room where luggage for international flights came in. In Rome, we did look for our bags to make sure. This was 2002.

My two experiences were in 2005 and 2006.

The regular airlines that I took to Rome were not prepared to check my luggage through to Palermo, because the AirOne flight was not on the same ticket.

We also had 2 separate tickets. When we checked in, we asked the US Air agent to check them through to Palermo. She put the baggage tag Rome-Palermo, but said she wasn't sure they would go through, which is why we looked for them in Rome. Surprisingly, there was the international room in Palermo. It wouldn't hurt to ask when you check in for your Rome flight.

I was in Palermo this summer, actually near mondello beach, but thats a hike. The most beautiful beaches though, but we stayed in some converted B&B on top of a mountain and we had to walk to get there, blahhhhhhh. BUt if its warm out, you must go to Mondello Beac. Me and my friend actually tried to walk to Palermo from Mondello Beach,,2 and half hours later and a car ride home from a local answered that bad decision.

Also, you can just hop on the bus , they donot collect money on bus for fare, u must buy bus tokens at tobacci shops or just hop on, they never check

Thanks for all the information. I think I will wait a little while longer to see if any other flights open up. If not I will book the 10:50 flight. I am worried because in 2005 we were on the same flight from Atlanta to Rome and got in an hour late. I don't remember how long it took us to get through customs, claim luggage and get out the door. It does not seem like it was that long. But I like to worry.

I will look into the hotel near the train station. Thanks for all the help.

I took a quick glance at Amadeus.net and saw there are plenty of daily flight flights. I arbitrarily chose July 15 and only looked at Alitalia. There are actually even more departures than shown below.

Bardo1, Help, please!

I went to amadeus.net, entered the information (I'm arriving late in Rome, so I am looking for a late flight to Palermo), and I kept getting this message:

Please specify an external identifier. (3104)

It means absolutely nothing to me! What am I doing wrong?

I don't know. At any rate, Amadeus.net is similar to ITA in that you have to contact te airline directly to book. Try the Alitalia site or telephoning them directly.
