ROME: Shopping for little girl's clothes

We hope to do some shopping for 2 little girls: 5 and 10 years old. (Both are princess-types.)

Not "designer" things, but definitely Italian. And not to break the bank. Maybe floppy suede boots. Cute little skirts. Unique tops. Those cute striped tights/leggings. That kind of thing.

Any suggestions for shops or streets we should head for? We'll be in Tuscany and Rome, leaving next week. Grazie!

I was just in Rome and have copied my shopping info below (focused on baby clothes but hope it is helpful - I think most info came from www.inromenow.com). I didn't make it to all the shops. Maybe you will

I should warn you...children's clothing is VERY expensive in Italy. If you are used to stores like Gap Kids, you are going to have sticker shock. Part of it is the exchange rate but I think kids clothes are just more expensive in Italy. For instance, I saw this adorable pink wool plaid loden coat for a baby that I would expect to cost maybe $50-80 in a Bloomingdales or Macys or boutique in the US. It was 100E which with the exchange rate when I was there was almost $150. Also the clothes run very small (although admittedly my daughter runs big). She wears 12-18mos. in the US and I had to get 24 mos. in Italy.

In addition to the stores below, I also loved a store (I forget the name) that is on one of the streets between the via del Corso and the Spanish steps. I don't think it was Via Condotti. If you are heading down the Corso with the Piazza del Popolo at your back it is on a street on the left about half way down the Corso. The shop is on the left side of the street about 2/3 of the way down, across from a gelato store and near a store that sells caps. The clothes were adorable and sound like what you are looking for - lots of bright patterns and fun tops and leggings - like Oilily. I was overwhelmed by the choice and ended up with nothing (instead buying a Petit Bateau outfit that I probably could have bought at home but it was cute anyway!). Maybe someone on here knows the store I'm thinking of.

La Cicogna, Piazza di Spagna
06/6791912
Via Frattina 138, Rome, Italy
La Cicogna, a nationwide chain, has several stores in Rome. Each is like a small department store, with clothing, shoes, carriages, baby supplies, and so forth, for children -- from infants to age 14. There's a maternity-wear department, too. Other location: Via Cola di Rienzo 268, Vatican, PHONE: 06/6896557.

Babe
Colorful, fun clothes for babies and little kids — shoes, gifts, toys. Carrying the French Sucre d'Orge line.
Via della Palombella, 22, tel. 06. 683 01975 (right behind the Pantheon)

Biancaneve e i sette nani
Aptly named after Snowhite and the Seven Dwarves, this is a hair salon for kids. The chairs are hobby horses and carousel creatures. The hairdresser is as kindly as a grandad.
Via Metastasio, 17 tel. 06.686 5409 (Pantheon)

Bonpoint Paris
Bonpoint, an exclusive French line of clothing from age zero to sixteen is haute couture for the young. This is not the place to shop for everyday play clothes. Fabrics are the highest quality cottons and linens. The designs are not trendy, but give a bit of a modern edge to otherwise classic designs. Made exclusively in France.
Piazza Di S. Lorenzo in Lucina (historic center) tel 06687 15 48

Cittá del Sole
Surely the best toy store in the city. There isn't an item for sale here you wouldn't be delighted to give your kids. Everything is thoughtfully arranged according to age; and most toys tap a child's natural curiosity, encouraging them to use their minds and to develop their creativity. Most of the items are neither expensive nor plastic. You can find wonderful train sets, puzzles and the like, crafted in wood, as well as updated versions of classic toys like yo-yo's, kites, and boomerangs and super-modern gadgets such as a digital weather station. Most items relate to the store’s theme of the natural elements: wind, light, sea and land.
Via della Scrofa, 65 tel.06. 688 03805 (Pantheon)
Also at Via Bunarroti 6 (Monti)
Via Marcantonio Colonna 5 (Prati)

L’Enfance: Abbigliamento Bambini
Much of the clothing here is designed to encourage free-movement during a child ’s play day. Separates or matching ensembles are available in a range of colors.
Piazza della Torretta, 27 tel. 06 686 9590 (Parliament, Historic Center)

Kid ’s Stock
This group of shops specializes in the perbene (classic, wel-heeled) look — nothing oversized or suggestive. Teenagers are in and out of the Via Vittoria location at the start of “Back to School,” collecting or fitting school uniforms for one of several italian private schools the store supplies. In other locations, a little more attention is given to a casual line. Denim or corduroy are likely trade-offs for more expensive fabrics.
Via Campo Marzio, 37 tel. 06. 68 71 335 (Parliament, Historic Center)
Also at Via Vittoria, 52 tel.06 69 20 222 89 (Prati)
Via A. Gramsci, 43 and 25 tel. 06 32 26 492 (Flaminio)

Marionette
Loaded with clothes for little ones as well as accessories and toys, at reasonable prices. This is a great resource for the hip parents of hip children- they even carry a selection of Keith Haring-inspired toys and jewelry for kids.
Piazza del Fico, 23-24 tel. 06.68210995 (near Piazza Navona)

Paper Moon
A newish little shop that offers lovely silk and linen clothes for very elegant children.
Salita di Crescenzo, 29 (near the Pantheon)

Petit Bateau
Petit Bateau sells children’s clothing with that French certain well-dressed but casual style. At this shop, the entire line is represented so that you can outfit your chlld from underwear to outerwear without leaving the premises, making it a convenient place to shop, although the space becomes a bit cramped when the occupancy exceeds two adults and one child. Sizes zero and through 8 years. Pyjamas from zero – 16 years.
Via di Campo Marzo. 10/B (historic center) tel 06 679 23 48

Pinco Pallino
Pinco Pallino's fashionable address next to Tiffany’s in Via del Babuino is notches away from the sneaker and jean culture of the young and restless. Designers and owners, Imelda and Stefano Cavalleri export their unique line of children’s fashion worldwide. With stores in Asia, the Middle East and Europe, their whimsical designs, a mix of tyrolean day wear with classic and contemporary cuts, cater to the young globe trotter with a princely wallet.
Via del Babuino, 115

Prototype Kids
Kids who insist on the best labels will be thrilled to discover this bastion of mini-Diesel, Converse and Nolita fashions, from groovy little jeans and shirts to sport shoes just like Daddy’s. Grown-ups can find larger sizes of the same labels at Prototype not kids, next door.
Via dei Giubbonari,50 tel. 06.683 000330 (near Campo de' Fiori)

Pure Gold
Leading names in fashion, like Roberto Cavalli are now designing down-sized versions of their own pret-a-porter lines for a booming retail market, ages 5 to 14. Pure Gold Boutique for girls only, is for “girls who wanna have fun” jazzing up their party frocks in lace, satin, sequins and flowing diaphanous glam. The store’s kitsch design is the perfect foil for their over-the-top wares.
Via del Babuino, 150/d tel 06 323 5464

Rachele
This children’s shop is on such a tiny vicolo, we only stumbled into it by happy accident. The wares are all fashions for the under age nine set, and all are made especially for the store — most of them by Rachele herself, who has set up her workshop there. Look for overalls in adorable fabrics, sweatshirts, pants and skirts. And don’t miss the colorful hand-crocheted hats.
Vicolo del Bollo, 6/7 (off Via del Pelllegrino) tel. 06.6864975 (near Campo de' Fiori)

Replay
In the shadow of the Pantheon, this shop is the home of the trendy Replay jeans line, which also includes jackets, printed shirts and accessories. For the trendy child in your life, there’s a Replay kid’s shop next door.
Via della Rotonda, 25
Via della Rotonda, 21 kids (Piazza della Rotonda, the Pantheon)

Zucca Stregata
The bewitched pumpkin, sells their own brand of blankets, bedroom slippers, pajamas, backpacks and accessories of all kinds, t-shirts and sweats, all in their signature prints, so charming they even make a few items for mom. Bunnies and elephants, kittens and birds dance across gingham checks.
Via Belsiana, 70 (Trident)

Via Cola di Rienzo is a mid-level (neither high-end "designer" nor bargain basement) shopping street favored by many Romans.

Sally! You outdid even my grandest expectations...what a list! Thanks.

Zerlina: Is Via Cola di Rienzo over by the Vatican and Castel St Angelo? I think we did some shopping there a couple of years ago.

I've shopped at PURE for my girls and while it is a fantastic store, the clothes are all designer labels and extremely expensive. Lavori Artigianilli Feminilli on Via Capo le Case 6 near the Spanish Steps has beautiful dresses, some hand smocked and embroidered, in cotton, silk and wool. Also very expensive but if you are looking for an heirloom gift, baptism gown or First Communion dress, this is the place. Mettimi Giu has fun clothes like Oililly. Very colorful and not too expensive. They were on Via Due Macelli near the Spanish Steps. Another option is the COIN department store in Trastevere. They have cute things at very affordable (for Rome) prices.

We will be spending one full day in Trastevere. Do you know where the Coin store is?

Via Cola di Rienzo is north of the Castel Sant'Angelo; if you cross the bridge closest to Piazza del Popolo, it leads into Via Cola di Rienzo.

The COIN department store is at Viale di Trastevere 60.

Hey,

There are some lovely shops in Italy you could visit but if you are unable to find what you are looking for you can still check out M&S.. I'm pretty sure they deliver out there too. If your after something a bit more dressy try https://lilyheritage.co.uk they specialise in special occasion children's wear. Hope you find what you're looking for.
