I'm not sure what you mean by "picking up" a last minute Scavi tour. You have to e-mail a request to reserve a spot on a Scavi tour, just like anyone else. If someone doesn't show up for a tour that's already been scheduled, no one in the Swiss guard screams out into St. Peter's Square "Hey! Anybody wanna go on a Scavi tour?"

Good luck!

Yeah, I think you grasped my true meaning. Perhaps, more clearly, I should have asked:
Has anyone here ever walked up, day of, and gotten on a tour because of cancellations? Or, if people do not show, do the tours just go on, short that number of people?
Aside: I sent an email request to them yesterday just on the off chance, and did recieve my automated reply in my email this morning. Sounds, from reading this forum, like a bit of a record. I did send them two emails, the first general in nature, and the second, later, with more specific information as I learned that was needed. Because I hit "reply all" to my own sent message, the message field said RE: necropolis tour. Made me wonder if I got a quicker response because they thought they had already responded to me...
Thanks for any help.

When we were scheduled for the Scavi Tour, we had to show the Swiss Guards our confirmation just to get to the Scavi Tour Office. They would not let you go past them unless you had it, so I don't know how you get on a tour that has had cancellations.

They don't take anyone else on a tour if someone has cancelled at the last minute or failed to show up, or is late. (They're prompt, and will definitely start without people if they haven't shown up.) Therefore "picking up a last minute Scavi tour" isn't an option. Those residents of the Vatican, they really like to plan things in advance as much as possible. Since the Scavi tour isn't all that expensive to begin with, it's not like they feel they have to "recoup" any dough for a no-show.
