I like Rome more then Paris, but I am not saying that Paris is a bad place, But given the choice between the two i would visit Rome again, and i would take a tour through the ruins. I also loved Amsterdam, i would like to goto Germany or Poland to visit a concentration camp, i am enthralled by WWII and human survial

Couldn't disagree more. It may not be my favorite town or city in Europe but it is my favorite "big" city. So much to see. A fountain, church, ancient ruin around every corner. It is big and noisy but where else is there so much to see and do.

I like Rome--always had a good time there. On the other hand, I can't stand Florence. I found Florence much more crowded, dirty, noisy, hot, humid than Rome. And Rome has a lot more variety than Florence--if you're not into the Renaissance in a really big way, then Florence gets boring real, real quickly.

To be honest, I haven't been to a major European city that I haven't loved. Rome isn't quite Paris, but that's like comparing tiramisu to creme brulee - they're both excellent, so why bother ranking them?

Rufus, I feel the same as you vis-a-vis Rome & Florence. Although I've only been to Florence once and my two visits to Rome have both been post-Jubilee Year (when it was apparently cleaned up quite a bit) I recall Florence as being dirtier, and the traffic being far more intense.

I absolutely loved Rome....maybe it was the time of year that you went? I went last spring and it was gorgeous.

I loved it much more than Florence or Venice. Which part of Rome did you stay in? I wonder if that has anything to do with folks not liking it.

I have a month to go before I return to Rome and I am counting down the days....

Just had to add my two cents.

We LOVED Rome. My husband and I took our first trip to Italy and spent a month traveling to Rome, Venice, Florence, Siena, Assisi, Bologna, and Milan (plus other hilltowns in Tuscany and Umbria).

We loved them all but Rome was our favorite. Can't wait to go back!

I've been to Rome 7 or 8 times. The first time there I did not like it. But since I love Italy in general I found I could not avoid it as it is a transportation hub for venues such as the Amalfi Coast which I love and so many other locations I like.

Now I love Rome but have learned that I can only take about 3 days there and then I gotta move on to the Amalfi, Tuscany, Umbria or Ligure regions. Rome is a bit intense but I look foreward to another three days there later this year.

I found Rome overwhelming and fascinating at the same time. After five days, I was completely exhausted. I'd love to go back at a different time of year (never again in JULY) and have a more relaxed itinerary.

I had my first visit to Rome last month and enjoyed it. Of course, I have enjoyed every place I have been in Europe. I saw an incredible spectacle of birds flying over Piazza Republica. Hundreds were criss-crossing with each other making various designs - it was like giant waves floating through the sky. The museums are awesome. Rome is a very easy city to walk around. I had a great time and defintely plan on going back.

ATTENTION EVERYBODY, ESPECIALLY FIRST TIMERS IN ROME and those who missed out, BIG TIME.

LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION (Been to Rome twice in 4 years and love it each time). The Spanish Steps are is excellent for walking around and for watching and observing the locals. What's not to like ? The incredible history, the art, the well dressed locals, great food, gelato, the shopping, the fountains, the SHOES!!!! ....ENOUGH SAID....ALSO KEEP IN MIND ...SPRING IN ROME IS AMAZING. I've always enjoyed any European cities/destinations in the month of MAY....I truly believe it makes a HUGE difference. Live and learn.
PS......Rome is always a treat !

Yes, rj007, the birds! Glad someone else noticed them. My husband and I spent quite a bit of time on the Campidoglio watching the flocks of birds fly in formation. I thought it looked like a screen saver, but I'm sure waves is a more poetic description.

After reading about Rome before our trip from this website, I expected to be overwhelmed and unenthused. I was neither. I wish I would have had another couple of days to see more.

We were also there the first week of March, so the crowds were not a problem, nor the heat.

I guess it depends on what you enjoy doing and seeing. I am facinated by the architecture, the similarities I found to larger cities in the USA (as far as traffic and types of places people work and live), and how the locals handle tourists. All so interesting.

But it was my first trip overseas.

I hated my first trip to Rome. I was an inexperienced traveler, didn't understand the culture and almost everything that could go wrong when traveling went wrong in Rome (arriving on a packed train (people sleeping in the corridors it was so packed and you couldn't get to the toilet without walking on bodies) on May Day with no where to get Lire or a map, perverts on the buses (well - only one pervert but it only takes one!), stolen luggage, annoying men following us, endless bureaucracy at the post office and police station.

I didn't return to Rome for many years. On my second trip I saw the beauty of Rome but thought it was endlessly noisy and crowded and I hated the people pushing and shoving.

On my third trip I more understood the beauty of Rome and knew how to find quiet respites from the noise and crowds.

I look eagerly look forward to my fourth trip.
