Rome - my least favorite city

Just thought I'd post that and see how many flames I'd get. Seriously, aside from some beautiful churches and amazing artwork, I thought it was dreadful. Anyone else agree?

Well, it's not my most favorite, but certainly not the least.

I love Rome. But I love a number of other cities more. I guess your e-mail isn't particularly enlightening for those travelers looking for ideas for their next trip. I think we'd far rather hear why you feel as you do and what cities you do like.

We were there about 25 years ago and didn't really like it.

As it turns out location had a lot to do with it.

Were there 2 years ago and stayed near the Fountain of Trevi and Pantheon.

We really enjoyed walking the whole city each day.

Good walking weather also helps.

I would definitely stop there for a couple of days.

On the other hand, here's something I do find dreadful...

I wasn't blown over by the place, either. The Vatican and its' museums were great, and there were a few magical moments, but it's not on my top 10 list, by any means.

I didn't like it as much as Paris, but I wouldn't call it dreadful.

Beware, lots of flame coming! LOL.

Just got back from Italy a few days ago, and you won't get an argument from me. Couldn't wait to get out of Rome.

We loved Rome--the vibrant atmosphere, the beautiful churches and museums, and all that wonderful pasta.

Least favorite city? Have I got some cities for you! Drive from Colorado to SF sometime. You'll find cities you like far less!

Dreadful cities:
Calcutta? Bagdhad?
I sort of get the feeling that someone had just a bit of a bad time and poor Rome is getting the blame.
How could Rome be dreadful?

Least favorite? Ever been to Mogadishu? Or Modesto? (Grasshopper was so right.)

Anyway, if we're voting, Rome is one of my very favorite cities.

Si, Scarlett. I want to be dreadful, just like Rome.

So a piece of string slithers into a bar and orders a drink.

"We don't serve string in here!" shouts the bartender, "Get OUT!!"

Humiliated, the piece of string goes outside and start to sob. But then -- voila! -- an idea hits and the string rapidly rubs itself up against a nearby brick wall and then ties itself up. It rolls back into the bar and, once again, orders a drink.

"Say....," says the bartender, "you look awful familiar. Aren't you that piece of string that was just in here?"

"Nope," replies the string, "I'm a frayed knot."

Grazie. It's not mine...but it's one of my all-time favorite bar jokes. Who can't admire the ingenuity and panache of that poor sobbing rejected piece of string?

I can't think of a single thing in Rome I found dreadful. Well OK, the Tiber could be a lot more picturesque. The people were warm; the food was great; the gelati was more heavenly than St. Peters; the sights were magnificent; and the traffic was intense, but drivers stopped for us every time when we crossed the street <i>without hesitating</i> (the key, we discovered.)

But I'm still going!! I'd appreciate your input and that of others that have traveled to Rome as to the weather in Nov.-Dec., which is the only time we are able to go to Italy. We will be in Rome from the 19th to 23rd of Nov., and I do not like to be cold. From there we will be traveling south, and what a love word that is: South. Thanks!
