On my recent trip, we went on the tour of the old burial grounds under St. Peter's. You have to contact that office at the Vatican before hand to reserve tickets. It was amazing and probably one of the most memorable moments of my trip!

The Domus Aurea (Nero's House) was fascinating. It's right across from the Colosseum. It is like visiting an archeological site-- amazing history!

I wonder why nobody mentions the Fontana di Trevi? I've been living in Rome for nearly 20 years now, and I still gasp with pleasure every time I walk into it. Especilly since the clean up in 2000 - at night it's breathtaking.

CyberUK, that was pretty amazing...The only bizarre thing that probably involved gysies was at Termini, when we just found out that the one euro metro ticket was good only for one ride.

We went to the machines, and my sister was the designated ticket buyer--all of us had money in our moneybelts and only I had a few euros in my pants pocket. There was a kid, darting about apparently playing around the machines. We went to a machine a few feet away and my sister was buying the ticket. After my sister inserted her money, the kid darted over, and said, No, like this, and proceeded to start pushing the button for the ticket, and handed the dispensed ticket, and stuck his hand in the change return slot. Luckily, my sister had only popped in one euro. At this point, my Mom realized what was happening and stepped between the kid and my sister.

At this point, the kid lost interest and proceeded to "help" some other people.

This is a very ingenious scam--helping people buy their Metro tickets, pocketing their change, and maybe even get a tip!

Just be careful of this particular gypsy scam.

I had saved this link off and asked my wife if she could think of any 'must nots' over dinner last night. Neither one of us has any regrets about what we did and saw, so I am deleting this link. I can think of nothing that should not be done in Rome...do it all, twice!

The only thing I would add is after a day of walking and visiting sites listed above, have a drink or meal at a rooftop restaurant/bar. We arrived shortly before sunset and stayed til the lights were on all over Rome. It was a most relaxing departure from the busy days of taking in the history, architecture, friendly people and shopping. Thank you Richardab for sharing your well done site. So many memories!

We were in Rome last week (our third trip) and since we had seen and done most os the "Top Ten" things, we took the Archeobus out the Appian Way to the catacombs and to see some ofd the aquaducts. We were the only six people on the little bus, since there weren't many tourists in February!

It's a hop on-hop off ride with a pretty good tour guide, and we were able to get off to take photos at the aquaducts, and stopped at the San Callisto catacombs for a very good tour.

CyberUK, great story. About what I had pictured. In my case it was two little girls with lots of jewelry and lipstick, tugging on my arms and making kissing sounds. But I got my street smarts just before anyone had gotten into my pocket. In fact I think I may have broken a couple fingers on the girl's hand that was just about to enter the pocket. Hooray for your wife!!
