ANd.. WOW!! Cicerone, Bardo1, Patrick -- perhaps you all need to get out and get a life ... I've been in some of my favourite local restaurants in London (without tourists) for lunches and dinner last night. I came back to being criticized for wanting to find similarly cozy spots in Rome. That's pretty intense and weird. Of course it makes sense ask for guidance off the tourist track -- at Easter! For those of you who gave generous tips, thanks very much.

And yes, Cassandra -- I am a newbie (and pointless banter/bullying such as from the above, might not come back!)Appreciate your pointing that out.

There are a lot of residential neighborhoods that don't get tourists, yet have some very good restaurants.
On our last trip to Rome, we had the good fortune to stay in a location (northeast part of the city) that allowed us to explore some of these neighborhoods in the evening. We dined in several nice places that -GASP- did not even have English and Japanese translations of their menus!!!!
We didn't bother to write the names down as we didn't have any trouble finding nice places to dine that didn't have other tourists--or at least not enough non-residents to notice that there were any.
