Rome in March
Has anyone taken a few days and gone from Rome to Assissi? Is there a Eurotrain to Assisi from Rome as we do not have a car. Any suggestions for day trips ? Any cooking lessons in Rome? We are planning on the OPera at All Saints Church. Thanks Ellen

There is no "Eurotrain" in Italy. The Italian national rail system is nicknamed Trenitalia and formally known as Ferrovie dello Stato. You can check schedules for trains between Rome and Assisi here:
http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html
Most train options for Rome to Assisi require a change at Foligno and take 2-2.5 hours in each direction. At Assisi you will need to take a bus or taxi from the train station to reach the ctual hill ton of Assisi.

Yes, I've gone to Assisi from Rome for an overnight, once in December and another time either in February or March. It's easy and not a particularly long train trip, maybe two hours or so. Check trenitalia.com for schedules. Once I had to change trains in Foligno; the last time I did this we were on an ES the whole trip and did not change trains. I just plugged in a random date for March 2011 and saw that there is an ES from Roma Termini to Assisi with no change at Foligno at 1:32 and another at 10:00 pm.
But honestly the change at Foligno was no big deal.
Both times I just bought the tickets in Rome at travel agencies that I happened to walk by. Of course there are other methods--this was the easiest for me. In Assisi you will arrive in the lower town. You will need to taxi or take a bus to the upper town. Lots of people recommend the bus, but both times I took a taxi for convenience.
Can't help with your other questions, sorry. I'm sure others will have answers for you.
Have a great trip!

Hi Ellen,
There are plenty of cooking lessons in Rome. Let me know if you are looking for suggestions and I'd be glad to hook you up with our friends.
My wife and I love Assisi, as do so many Italy travelers for so many reasons, so if you are thinking of going we would suggest doing it. From reading your previous post it sounds like you have a few days to do it. You can take a train, and as others correctly pointed out, not all trains from Rome require switch in Foligno but many do. We stayed in Foligno recently at a lovely hotel and there are some new restaurants in Foligno too making it a fine place to visit in Umbria not just a pass through.
Umbria is full of lovely places to call home for 2 or 3 nights. Assisi works. Palazzo Bocci in Spello we stayed many times, including for our wedding in 1996. Let them know we sent you and you will be treated well. These days Perugia is a little too noisy for us. But I would suggest visiting Perugia and its art museum - a must see if visiting Assisi and staying in that area of Umbria for a few days.
Let us know what your interests are and maybe we can suggest other ideas in Umbria and Rome.
Buon Capodanno
