How heavy of a coat should I wear

What do you intend to do? I walked just about everywhere and carried an umbrella that slowly collapsed and survived in a Barbour with a large jumper and lined trousers, plus I'm male. If visiting say St Peters that is not a problem as it is not over heated but if I'd gone to the spanish steps and gone in the all the shops I'd have died.
