Rome in Feb with kids?

We are thinking of going to Rome for 1 week with our 2 boys age 6&7 end of Feb during their winter break. How's the weather around that time? Will it be too cold to walk around outside with the kids? We are from New England but we usually don't stay outside for a long time in the winter. Also, any recommandation for what to do with the kids there? They have been travelling with us a lot and are pretty good doing adult stuff with us but if there is something especially for them to spend a day, that will be helpful to keep them happy. Any recommandation for a centrally located hotel which will let us to just stay in one room/junior suite or we have to book 2 rooms? Finally, is it safe to walk around with kids since my hubby is hesitated of going now when the boys are still quite young but I really want to do it.
Thanks for all the help. I know I can count on the experts here as before.

We went to Rome over the February school vacation last year. It was certainly warmer than it is here in Massachusetts; there are palm trees in Rome. We did have one miserable, rainy day, but most days were probably in the fifties. In Rome the locals wear their heavy winter clothes in that weather, but it felt pretty good to me.

While I don't have young children, I think it is perfectly safe to walk around Rome with children. The main safety issue would be crossing the street, which would require some tight hand holding.

I've taken my two daughters, now ages 10 and 7, to Italy twice in the last three years. I suggest you get a copy of the Fodor's book "Around Rome With Kids" which has 100 suggestions of things that children your sons' ages would enjoy. We stay at the Del Senato Hotel which is next to the Pantheon. Can't get more centrally located than that. We stay in the Senior Suite which has two rooms and large bath and terrace. Perfect for parents and two young children. It is about 425 Euro per night, breakfast included. They also have a quad room which is less expensive but much smaller. If you go to the Slowtrav.com website, search under trip reports for my "Principesse Tour" which describes my daughters' time in Rome. I also have a travel note on that website entitled "Chills and Thrills in the Eternal City" which lists lots of things young boys might enjoy.

Take the boys to ROme. They'll love it. If you can fit in a day trip to Pompeii, they'd probably really enjoy that too. Our family of 4 stayed in a quad (a 2 room suite) at the Santa CHiara hotel. It's in an excellent location and is a very nice hotel. A very ample breakfast buffet is included.

Thank you all for the replies. Now that I know the weather is going to be fine plus I've read Grinisa's trip report which is very good and I think my boys will love all those activities in Rome and they love pizza and pasta. I will check into the hotels mentioned by Grinisa and MFNYC. I am sure I will have more questions later regarding day trips etc... Thanks again for everyone's help.

You might also want to look into the Albergo Cesari. We will be travelling to Rome this March with our two kids and have booked a quad room there. It has excellent reviews on tripadvisor.com as well as fodors and slowtrav.

Your little ones are lucky! It's never too soon to plant a seed for a life long love of travel and learning.

First time I ever went to Rome was when my daughter was 11 months old (she's 17 now). We went to a Pope's "audience" and he stopped and blessed her and she did the finest raspberry one could do in response - I'll never forget that.
I've been back to Rome a few times since, but what I remember from that trip and the photos of it was that it was pretty balmy - we were in shirtsleeves.
