Rome Hotels - First Time in Italy

Is there anyone who has any information, firsthand or otherwise, about the Majestic Hotel in Rome? We are first-timers, willing to splurge a bit and trying to decide between the Rome Excelsior or Majestic.

I have not stayed at either the Excelsior or the Majestic, but here are a few facts you might want to consider.

The Excelsior is a Westin and a Starwood Luxury Collection hotel, which is a guarantee of some kind. As far as I have been able to discover, the Majestic has no such affiliation.

On www.tripadvisor.com, the Excelsior ranks as No. 14 in Rome, the Majestic as No. 123. But great caution should be exercised about the "user reviews" on www.tripadvisor.com: the Al 58 di via Cavour, which has often been exposed for posting fake "user reviews" on this forum, now ranks an amazing No. 19 on www.tripadvisor.com -- due to 36 "user reviews," of which probably 35 at least have been posted by the hotel itself.

I would suggest that you read the reviews (including those from guidebooks, travel magazines, etc.) of the Excelsior and the Majestic on www.tripadvisor.com, decide for yourself which you find more credible and reserve accordingly.

Thank you, Eloise, for your reply. I cannot believe that with all the people that supposedly travel to Europe that no one has been to these hotels or has any info on them.

In my opinion, the best/most central area to stay in in Rome would be close to Piazza Navonna. It is within walking distance of everything in the city.
