Rome Hotels
Looking for some hotel recommendations in Rome for November. I have a few in mind, but would like the input of those of you who have been there. All suggestions are welcome! Share your favorites and why. Thank you in advance!
Michele

In November of 1998 my wife and I stayed at Best Western Villafranca Hotel - about 4-5 blocks away from Termini train station. It is small and quiet. What we benefited the most is that we never had to take taxi due to proximity to the train station. I think we paid around $100-120 US (includes all taxes). However, althought its still considered downtown, this is not the most interesting area of Rome.

The Hotel Raphael is one of the most charming, elegant and intimate 4-star hotels in Rome--I haven't yet stayed there--it's a bit over my budget, but I'm saving it for a splurge. I love its little private piazza and its quiet location in the heart of Vecchia Roma, near the Piazza Navona.

Info on Hotel Viminale
Michele--Will copy earlier post for you on H. Vimnale in central Rome:

Message: We stayed at Hotel Viminale (***) for L340,000 per night for two,
breakfast included. Rooms are standard size (for a 3-star hotel, smallish by
American standards), and include all amenities--in-room bath/shower, AC, hair
dryer, safe, fridge, etc. Breakfast is very ordinary, and served in a quiet little
courtyard at ground level. It's got to be the safest hotel in Rome--located right
across the street from the Ministry of Police--there are literally two armed
policemen on the quiet little street 24 hr per day. It is centrally located on Via
Cesare Balbo(#31), a very quiet, narrow, one-way street w. little traffic just off
two major streets (west of intersection of Via Cavour and Via Depreti) about a
10 min walk from Termini, Vittorio Emanuele Monument, Colosseum, Santa
Maria Maggiore (a must-see church; its Sixtine Chapel and Borghese Chapel
rival anything you will see in St. Peters). Both trattoria and market w/in half
block. Outdoor courtyards--w. lawn swings!--on both 4th and 5th floors, w. nice
view of Maggiore about 3 blocks away.
For more info and pix, see their web site:
http://www.travel.it/roma/hotelviminale/

E-mail: [email protected]

I stayed at the Sant’Angelo Hotel (3*) in Rome 2 years ago:

http://www.charmingrome.com/angelo/pages/profile.htm
Fax: 011-39-06-320-4451

It is well situated, on a quiet side street, within walking distance of the Vatican and Spanish Steps (it's on the Vatican side of the river). The hosts had a wonderful restaurant recommendation a block or two away (we ate there 2 of the 3 nights we stayed at the hotel).

Michele,
Just returned last night.
Can't write much, but
Della Torre Argentina.
we had a suite, because of the children. which was quiet and O.K, but nothing special.
(Except foir the roof terrace, and continental breakfast.)
but, the last night in rome, before we left for the beach, i walked into the
Hotel del Senato, which is right on the P. Rotunda, and looks right over the Pantheon.
I made reservations for 2 rooms for our return to Rome,(still with children, but without husband , my best friend took his place)
The rooms were small, but very lovely.
The staff there was VERY friendly to me, (and I do not think it was only because I blasted into there with a big smile on my face, talking garbled italian to them.)
I paid 390,000 lira per night, per room , for two persons.
(about $200/ night)
they may have cheaper rooms also.
I would definitely return!!!
Have fun!!

We also stayed at the Villafranca and thought it was a wonderful bargain at the price. We have been in Rome before and did not mind the location for we did find it very convenient. It is also very easy to book and cancel by using the 800 Best Western number. We also saw the Canada which was very near and it is also under the Best Western umbrella and this hotel has good reviews in guide books. You will probaby get a better price in November and if you are a senior citizen they give you a discount.

I recommend Residenza Farnese. It's in your price point and has a fabulous location, right next to the Campo Dei Fiori, a side street off of the Piazza Farnese. A 15 minute walk to Forum 15 minute walk to Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, 5 minute walk to Piazza Navona. Here's the link: http://mysite.ciaoweb.it/rfarnese/
Free free to e-mail me if you have more questions about Rome.

We stayed at the Best Western President. It was okay, but when we checked out, they charged us for pay per view movies that we hadn't watched. We don't speak Italian, and the desk clerk didn't speak English, so we just paid is (the equivalent of $20) and went on our way.

I can recommend the Hotel Condotti, Manfredi or Mozart, all in the Piazza di Spagna area, the Hotel Accademia, close to the Trevi Fountain, but they are all above 150 dollars per night, except the Hotel Mozart. If in Summer, the rates will be discounted.

Michelle et al.:
In figuring your price point you should keep in mind that November is the off season. You should expect to pay at least 20 percent less than the prices quoted for regular season. This should put many nice hotels within your price range. I recommend you try to stay in the centro storico area and avoid Termini, Vatican or other out of the way areas. Many good hotels have been mentioned on this forum.
Good hunting.
