Rome hotel suggestions for July

Hello friends!

My husband and I are in our early thirties and traveling to Europe for the first time this summer. We will spend the first week in Paris and the second in Rome. I am looking for Rome hotel suggestions. We would like a CLEAN, centrally located place or at least a place in a good area. We would like the place to include breakfast and have a decent sized bathroom. We are looking to spend up to $150 a night but willing to spend more if the place is worth it or less if the place is a deal (while not sacrificing quality). Any help would be greatly appreciated as it's really hard to research hotels with no prior knowledge. We did have friends stay at the Hotel Oxford about 5 years ago and they suggested it. Any thoughts on this hotel? Thanks again for your help!

I can't recommend anything specific but a good search engine for modestly priced hotels is www.lonelyplanet.com. Use the tab "hotels" and then there are lots of ways to sort, by date, set your own price range, etc. There are reviews of many there. Then you can also "triangulate" by checking specific hotels ratings and available rates on www.tripadvisor.com, www.venere.com or www.booking.com. Or bring specific ideas back to this forum to ask readers about the hotel or the neighborhood.

Try the Hotel Aberdeen or the Best Western Canada.

Your 110 euro budget isn't very much for a hotel in Rome during the high season, especially one that meets all of your requirements. Even the budget hotels around Termni want 90 euros for a single.

Good luck!

Agree that your budget is modes if you want a central locations and AC (many modes hotels in Rome do NOT have AC - and you don;t want to stay there in the summer without it).
Suggest you look at the discount sites to see what may be availalbe that is central and then ask here to see if anyone is familiar.

As suggested, your budget of approx. €110 may limit your options. The good news is that you can find smaller hotels or B&B's in that price range if you don't mind a short commute to the sites.

As Emanuela mentioned, the least expensive are in Rome may be the Roma Termini Train station area. there are more than 350 accommodations packed into this area. It's not the prettiest but with both metros meeting here and a HUGE bus station, it's the most connected. So price and convenience are it's best selling points.

Below is a link for some accommodation suggestions from Booking.com and Venere.com for the Roma Termini area. The article has the "BEST-RANKED" accommodations by their guests. This link contains a map, photos, and also ANOTHER link at the bottom of the article that ranks the area by price - which could help you with your budget!

I like using venere and booking.com as only guests who have actually stayed there can place a comment and rating on their site... so no ballot stuffing or bogus-info as other travel sites may have. And that's always plenty of comments!

We've lived in Vatican area for 3+ years and enjoyed the atmosphere. Once the museums close up for the evening, the entire "mood" changes. And It is well connected to downtown via bus and metro - there are many smaller B&B's in the area, thus less expensive. Here again are the best-ranked by venere and booking.com guests.

If you can find a spot, I'd certainly look in the centro area. These accommodations are closest to "the sites" and if it's your first time, you can't beat staying downtown! Here are links for the centro area:

A cheaper alternative to the centro area might be Trastevere. This is one of our favorite parts of town and we're fortunate to have many friends living in this section - so we get to go to dinner over there often. It's a wonderful part of town to wander at night. With many colleges in the area (and cheaper rents) this is a younger-set and can be a little loud at night... but that's part of the atmosphere! Here are a few suggestions:

Hope these help you in your search - You might look in the centro area articles and head to the bottom to sort by price - but definitely read the comments before booking!

The Vatican area might be a good less expensive alternative for you - or there's always the Roma Termini area!

Good Luck on your trip!
