My family trip to Rome/Florence just after Christmas is growing in number! As a result, we can't stay at the smaller, boutique hotels I had planned on as we now need a total of 8 rooms to accommodate us all. (I am having trouble getting that number of rooms available at that time.) What I would like to find is a larger hotel in Rome that is also in a good location for the older teens who might want to venture out as a group, finding things to do/see without going across the city. Just wondered if anyone had a recommendation for me to check. I am thinking of something in the 200-250 euro range (or less if possible) as three families need 2 rooms each. I have checked several hotel chains listed, but am unsure which would be in the best location. Thanks for any help. Jane

Best location in my opinion in Rome would be Piazza Navona or Campo De Fiori. There are many hotels available in middle size in your price range however keep in mind that on Dec 30-Jan 1 the price goes up for New Year.

Residenza Farnese will accomadate your group nicely. It's in your budget and ideally located on a quiet square 2 blocks off Campo dei Fiori. Here's tripadvisor, I couldn't find their website:

Don't feel like you need to go with chains - there are hundreds of independent hotels large enough for your group.

We (a group of five couples) have stayed at the Genio Hotel (2002) and the Nazionale a Montecitorio (2004).

Both are very well located; the Genio is just steps from Piazza Navona and the Nazionale is very near the Pantheon.

The five rooms we had the the Genio varied greatly in size, so ask for larger rooms. There was a rooftop terrace which we enjoyed.

All our rooms at the Nazionale were good sized. Both hotels had good breakfasts.

People I work with were able to book 10 rooms at www.hotelsonya.it. It's in front of the Opera House near Piazza della Repubblicca. They leave this Friday so I'll try to post when they get back whether they liked the hotel or not. It is a 3 star and I think they are paying 120E per night. They contacted the hotel and the hotel arranged to block some rooms for their group for 48 hours. Each couple going then booked their own room by contacting the hotel and requesting one of the blocked rooms.

I can't help you with the hotels but I can recommend an itinerary:

Day 1: Organise an afternoon tour of Rome in general.
Day 2: Organise a tour of the Vatican Museum and church
Day 3: Organise a tour of the Roman Forum and the Colosseum
Day 4: Open

(Day 2 and 3 can be switched)

The Hotel Della Torre Argentina might accommodate all in your party. It has 60 rooms ( not large, but not small either..).

It's at Corso Vittorio Emanuelle, a very busy street, but close to where you want to be, i.e., the Piazza Navonna, Pantheon, Campo dei Fiori.

Have you thought about apartments as an option. For example http://www.romeapartments.info or http://www.dolceroma.it. Or try this agency - http://www.rentalinrome.com/index.htm. They seem to have quite a selection. They may well be able to help you accommodate everyone in the same apartment building.
