Trastevere vs. Piazza Navona - Best Reasons To Stay in Either Location?
We're visiting Rome for the first time - 6 days - in May 2007. Having followed this forum, it seems that either location is a good choice. Holding reservations at Santa Maria and Due Torri (can make final choice later). Your thoughts about the best of reasons to stay in either location?

While you are holding reservations for two hotels, you may be causing other travelers, who have been able to make up their minds, to receive negative answers from those hotels.
I would respectfully suggest that you show more consideration for your fellow travelers.

We have stayed at both Due Torri and Portoghesi. You really can't go wrong with either. I preferred the location of Portoghesi a bit more. Also, the Portoghesi has a roof terrace where we have had some afternoon snacks bought at the shop on the corner. I think the rooms at Due Torri are a bit nicer, though.

We stayed at the Hotel Ranieri on Settembre, a few blocks from the train station for 171E a night... It was very nice, good breakfast, helpful staff and very quiet. It is a bit of a walk but we even walked all the way back to it from the Vatican, and we didn't mind a bit... I think all the walking was one of the reasons I lost 3 pounds on the trip......And we found a lot of nice quaint little restaurants to eat at in the vicinity....I'd stay there again.....

I am going to Rome in November and staying at the Hotel Adriano. I stayed in the Due Torri a few years ago and loved it. If you can wait a few weeks i can tell you about the Adriano!

Hmmmm...
We have stayed at the TeatroPace33 (at a much lower price; not worth what they are asking,especially when you have better hotels offered at a lower price); the Due Torri and the Portoghese. We have returned to the Portoghese as our hotel of choice, above the others, twice.
I found the rooms at the Portoghese to be much nicer than the rooms at the due Torri. Maybe we were unlucky, but our Portoghese rooms, though small, were kitted out somewhat luxuriously. The room at the due Torri was a bit shabby.
Due Torri staff: definetly the best.
Location: I would pick the Portoghese, but only be a hair. The locations are almost the same. From the Tevere, the entrance to the due Torri is a nasty, narrow walkway. From elsewhere, the entrance is through a smallish alley. The Portoghese entrance is much better placed.
I keep hearing about the Giardino. Where is this hotel? When I tried to Google it, I kept coming up with something way on the outskirts of Rome. I don't think that's the one folks here are talking about...
We won't be staying at any of the hotels where we've stayed in Rome in the past, unless the exchange rate improves dramatically. The prices have just become too expensive.

We are currently in the same position as OP pennywise3, looking to book a hotel for June 07. We want to spend most of our time out and about so aren't too hung up about a luxury room but dont want a dump! The NZD doesn't buy much these days, so that doesn't help either

It's in Via XXIV Maggio 51, that's just below the Palazzo del Quirinale, nearby the Trevi fountain and Piazza Venezia. It's not fancy but Katie and the rest of the staff made my stay very pleasant, they are all so kind and wonderful. I had a room facing the street, the double glazing made it possible to sleep well at night (I'm a light sleeper). Like in Paris, I keep changing hotels and locations every time I go to Rome, so I don't plan to go back to Giardino if I go in late April. But otherwise I would have no problem booking it again.

We're hung up on The Modigliani as a few other Fodorites are...a perfectly delightful establshment, about $200, small, boutiquey, good sized rooms, garden courtyard, rooftop, elevator, excellent breakfast, charming owners, competent English-speaking staff, quiet street (Purificazione) just a few blocks north of Piazza Barberini and close to Spanish Steps...walk almost everywhere in town.
