Rome car rental

We are staying at the Hotel Raphael near the Piazza Navona in July. We need to rent a car when we leave Rome to drive to Siena and then onto Florence (where we will drop the car). Can anyone recommend a car rental location/company close to our Hotel. We are renting on Friday in Rome and want to return the car on Sunday afternoon in Florence. (2 days) Any suggestions would be helpful.

It would be very easy for you to take a taxi from your hotel to the termini (main train station) and pick up your car rental. The Rental agent will give a map and instructions on how to exit Rome. It's a snap.

Its a snap for an experienced (with Rome) driver and not at rush hour on Fridays in the summer. We got it right the third time, but it can be a little hair-raising at that particular time of day/year.

Is it easier to drive out of the city from the termini than from a rental agency near our hotel. We are heading to Siena. There is an Avis near Via Veneto. Grazie.

We stayed between Piazza Navona and Campo dei Fiori. We took a taxi to the train station (15 euros for four of us with luggage) and rented a car there. The drive out wasn't simple but I think it is easier than driving out of town (based on our taxi ride) and we made it fine. After a couple of wrong turns we were on the autostrada.

Joanne,

The distance from your hotel to Via Veneto isn't much different than to the termini. Both offer a little challenge to exit Rome but it isn't that difficult and it's part of the adventure.

How is the reverse commute? Coming from Siena, we will be trying to get a rental car TO Termini from the "inner belt". Does anyone know which exit (name or number) we should take to get closest to Termini. Are the rental car "drop offs" easy to find as you are driving around the terminal?

Joanne,
we returned the rental car in Rome on sunday morning, even though we got lost, there was no traffic, no honks and therefore, no stress. I would say that if you choose a totally non-rush hour you will be OK.

Belle,
I don´t remember how we got from Siena to the A1 autostrade (the highway), but once you are there, you just follow the signs to Rome and then at the Gran Racodo (?) Anulare (one of the two roads that embrace Rome, there is the Big one Grande and the Small one, picolo)... at the Gran RAcoldo you follow the signs to Via Salaria. Follow Via Salaria until it ends, then ask for Via Veneto and follow it until signs to viatermini appear. For more detailed instructions go to www.viamichelin.com or www.mappy.com or www.shellgeostar.com

Good luck!

Thanks for the basic directions. At least now we have some idea as to what to look for.

Grazie.

Definitely pick the car up near the termini train station. Driving around the historic city center is a nightmare. Exit for the termini area isn't too bad. Try to svoid rush hour.
