Since you are going to the train station anyway, definitely take the train from the airport there. The train station is easily accessed from the airport by crossing a sort of pedestrian bridge -- well marked, and you can buy your tickets easily right there.

I'm laughing at the idea of walking. If you're talking about walking from the airport to Termini train station, it might take you a day or two!!!

Take the Leonardo Express from Fiumicino Airport to Termini Station. Trains every 20 minutes. Only 1st class. Trip lasts 30 minutes. Ticket costs about 9 euros per person. You can purchase the tickets near the platform at the tabacconist or at the nearby ticket counter.
Taxi is also doable: cost about 30-40 euros from the airport to Rome centre, but it depends on the traffic and on the point in Rome that you want to reach.

russ, if you don't already have your tickets for Rome-Florence, I suggest you purchase them at the airport ticket counter at the same time you buy the tickets from the airport into Rome. At the least this will save you waiting in another line and at best a considerable hassle at Termini, a large and extremely busy station. Don't forget to stamp your ticket at the bright yellow machine at the track entrance!

Hi
Good advice from Marilyn.
If you have a railpass, you can have it validated at the FCO train station.
