Rome after XMAS

HI! We are looking to go to Rome after XMAS and over NY. Is this an ok time ? Or will it be too crowded? Any suggestions on decent but not expensive hotels ?

Thanks !

Diana, I think I have seen some trip reports from people who have been to Rome during this time period. Do a search on Rome, and maybe you can find them.

We were in Rome this past Feb/March, and it was great to be there when it wasn't so hot!

this is a fine season to be in Rome since Epiphany is a big holiday there. Weve visited twice over New Year and Epiphany and enjoyed it very much. No its not too crowded since the business and government functions both slow down at that time.

On both visit, the weather was warm enough for us to wear our jackets open and sometimes, just a sweater. There is sometimes some rain or even a little snow at this season, but our experience was that it was only occasional and didnt get inour way much. The only negative to winter visits IMO is that the short days make afternoon church visits less rewarding (its really too dark when the churches reopen after 4 to see much in the way of their magnificent frescoes, mosaics, etc) So you have to get going early and do your church touring in the morning instead.

Hi Diana,
We were in Rome at Christmas, leaving New Year's Eve, this last year. It was a fine time to visit.

It was crowded - full of Italian families - but it was lots of fun. We rented an apartment and thought that was a great way to go (although I don't recommend our apartment.) You can find our trip report under my screen name. You can also find a trip report - I think it was from Momof5 - from 2005. They had a great time too and she was very helpful when I planned our trip last year.

The weather was nice, we wore a sweater or coat. On Christmas day we had lunch outside in the sun in t-shirts.

All the churches have nativity scenes, and we went church-hopping like the locals did. Christmas 2005.

Great! We are booked. Now I need info on hotels. I'll start a new thread.
