Ira - I often see you post against visiting Rome, yet you don't seem to have spent time there. Is your only experience in Rome the one day before your cruise staying near the train station? I suggest you revisit and stay in a better area.

Kybourbon, You have it slightly wrong: Ira spent one night at the Holiday Inn Parco dei Medici in EUR before flying out of FCO.

If June is very hot in the city, you might like to have a few days in the country. We hired a car and stayed in Viterbo, visiting the wonderful gardens in that area (Villa Lante, Bomarzo, Caprarola, and Tivoli.)

In Rome, the Mario Praz museum is fascinating, also the Villa Giulia with its Etruscan jewelry.

But, if I lived in America and had two weeks in Italy, I would spend one in Venice and one in Rome.

I adore Rome and would love to spend two weeks there. The Spanish Steps area is very lively, but for a first-time visit I would highly recommend the area around the Pantheon/Piazza Navona. It is very centrally located and you can walk practically everywhere in the centro storico.

Caveat: if I had two weeks to spend in Italy, and I knew I wouldn't be back for a few years, I would probably spend a few days in Venice as well, as others have suggested. It is one of my biggest regrets that I did not make it there while living in Germany for 2+ years.
