We stayed near St. Severin last time and I personally found it to be a bit "tacky" for want of a better word, i.e. too noisy, commercialized, etc. We would like to stay in a location ideally within walking distance to Le Louvre area. We are very hearty walkers. By romantic I suppose I mean having a lovely view and possibly a quieter locale. A small hotel would be preferable. Budget isn't a huge issue, although I guess we wouldn't wish to pay more than $350 CAD a night at the most. We love to walk and tend to cover several kilometers a day so that we can wine and dine with no guilt!

It sounds like you may like the Hotel de Varenne which is in the 7th district. You can walk it to the Louvre easily. The 7th is a quiet, residential neighborhood and it's completely opposite from the 5th. I think some rooms may have a tower view.

Pavillion de la Reine in the Marais just across from the beautiful Places des Vosges fits the bill for romantic and quiet. It's a small 4-star hotel with lovely rooms,( some face the outdoor garden) and within easy walking distance of the Picasso Museum, as well as lots of restaurants, galleries, and boutiques. The Louvre would be about a 30 minute walk.

Have a look at http://www.regent-paris-hotel.com/
We prefer an apartment in the 7th, but Hotel Le Regent receives raves from many of our friends (who've all "discovered" it from each other).
Amazingly, at a French restaurant we visited during vacation in Rehoboth, the owner, upon learning of our upcoming trip, said, "You MUST stay at Hotel le Regent!"
One of these days, we're going to give it a try.

At today's conversion rates, 350 CAD is about 246 Euros. If you can get the Pavillon de Reine for that price, oh do take it. To me, that would be the romantic hotel in Paris. A friend of mine and a traveling companion checked in on impulse for their last night in Paris and loved it. They split the cost of the double room and it was still a splurge for them, but one they felt was worth it.
I have been looking at hotels in Paris and you should easily be able to get a very nice and romantic room for less than 246 Euros.
I could recommend a romantic room for much less (around 150 Euros) if you are interested.

OK, it's not so much the hotel, but the room. The Hotel Palais du Bourbon, right across the street from the Hotel Varenne (we've stayed at both) mentioned above, has a large top floor room that they sometimes refer to as "the honeymoon room." We stayed in that room after our daughter went home and we switched from a triple to a double.
The room is large, has a very Parisian window that looks over rooftops, and has a sort of dormer/niche thingy that is tres Parisien.
This is not a really quaint hotel, or particularly romantic. It's on a great street in the 7th, around the corner from the Musee Rodin. The street is VERY local feeling. Shops, and stores where regular people go.
It's that big room at the top of the hotel with a nice sized double bed and great window overlooking the rooftops that we found so romantic.
I asked for the room for May, and the price was somewhere around 130 to 150. We are scrimping on this trip so I had to turn it down.
Love the street and love the room.

Hotel le Regent is certainly not in a quieter locale. On the contrary, it's in on a very busy street, full of tourists and restaurants. If you didn't like St. Severin (I don't) I don't think you would like this location (I don't).

Stayed here a couple of years ago. Not cheap but it was a fab room and fab location. If you are booking make sure you let them know it is for a weekend of romance and they may well do that little bit extra for you as they did for us. We had a bottle of champain and flowers waiting for us .. it was extra on the bill but it was worth ever penny.
