Roman Tours/Tipping
Hello fellow travelers!I'll be arriving in Rome in Dec. 26 2007 and I am counting down the days!
Does anybody know how much to tip a tourguide (in Euros)? I'm on a tight budget but I am willing to show my appreciation.
How far in advance should I book a tour? Are there other helpful tips I should be aware about?
(This is my first solo travel to Rome and I'm a young inexperienced female...any help is greatly appreciated). Many thanks!!!

On a recent trip to Rome with a family of four I tipped 10 Euro for a large group tour and 20 Euro for an 8 person private tour.
Others on the group tour tipped 0 Euro. I would think a tip of a couple to 5 Euro would be fine for one person.

Hi N,
Tour guides set their rates at what they think their time is worth.
There is no need to tip, unless to show appreciation for extra good work.
2-3E is sufficient.
Is there a reason why you need a guided tour? You might want to look up Rome under "Destinations".

Thank you, Ira. I would like to go on a guided tour because I have a great propensity for getting lost. I am also a bit nervous about traveling solo for the first time and I think that going on a tour would be a great way to see the historical sites, meet people along the way, and learn from the knowledgeable tour guides.

I've taken a few tours with Enjoy Rome and recommend them. The prices are moderate and the guides I had were quite good. I think a small group tour is an excellent way to introduce yourself to Rome and to meet fellow travelers:

I tip 10% to a tourguide, I think if the guide is knowledgeable and really goes out of his or her way to explain things it is worth a tip.
The only time I didn't tip was when a guide was wrong about almost everything she pointed out to us. She didn't take her job seriously so I didn't either.
I doubt if they set their fees if they work for a company. I have taken enjoyrome tours and some others which were really worthwhile. nia, it is a good way to see the city in depth.
