Maximilien François Marie Isidore de Robespierre was a French revolutionary who helped engineer the overthrow of the monarchy in 1789.
He was arguably the most significant driving force behind "The Terror" - the period following the revolution during which thousands of people were guillotined. When, in 1794, he raised vehement objections to the extremes to which the Committee of Public Safety had gone, they chopped him.
I adopted his moniker because although I subscribe to the revolutionary principles my country was founded upon, I object to the extremes of the past four years. (Robespierre was also somewhat of a fop - a dandy. I have been known as a rather sharp dresser.)

The article I read today by Leah (I can't remember her last name) is a gossip columnist and said that she heard from Robespierre some info on something or another. I saw the name (which was bolded) and I immediately thought of the robespierre on this forum.

Leah Garchick's column on SFGate.com (4/18/06)
Scroll all the way down to the bottom....
"Public eavesdropping
'Loneliness doesn't get you a God-damned cheeseburger.'
Street person on steps of an apartment in the lower Haight, overheard by Robespierre."

Hmmm... They rather chopped him because of the extreme to which he had gone along with the rest of the Commitee, when he intended to send to the guillotine yet another bunch of moderates. The terror ended with his beheading.
