WE SPENT A WEEK ON THE FRENCH RIVERA. IT WAS FABULOUS! IT HAS EVERYTHING TO OFFER--GREAT WINE AND FOOD, BEAUTIFUL SCENERY, SHOPPING, MUSEUMS, ETC. I SUGGEST STAYING IN NICE OR CANNES. YOU DON'T NEED A RENTAL CAR. BUS AND TRAIN SERVICE IS EXCELLENT. BE SURE TO VISIT MONTE CARLO ALSO.

Hi Alice. I'm a big fan of the French Riviera and have been going there twice a year for the past four or five years for some of the festivals. I have not yet been to the Amalfi Coast, unfortunately. That said, and throwing a little more confusion into the mix, if you're in Tuscany, I might consider the Cinque Terre or Portofino/Santa Margarita area. They're quite a bit closer, probably more charming - the French Riviera is generally pretty glitzy - and the food is better. (Although the bouillabaise at Tetou on the Riviera is amazing). They're also pretty comparable, or maybe less, on price. If you do decide on the Riviera, I'd probably stay in Cannes for the full-on experience, although some of the smaller towns to the South (Villefranche, Cap d'Antibes) are actually prettier. To my mind, you can't really go too far wrong anywhere along that coast.

Hi Alice! OK, I've been to all 3 areas, the French Riviera (Cannes, St. Tropez), Amalfi Coast and Italian Ligurian coast (Santa Margherita Ligure, Portofino & Cinque Terre). I liked the French Riviea, but we stayed in Cannes & I hated it. Way too much traffic, overpriced, too many highrise condos & hotels. I could have stayed home in Newport Beach, CA! Really liked the other riveria towns though, St. Tropez, St. Paul du Vence, etc.

Loved SML and Portofino, although I understand Portofino gets crazy in the summer. We were there in May & enjoyed it very much. Cinque Terre was very pretty but even in May the hiking path was quite busy. Lots of beautiful wildflowers. Vernazza & Riomaggiore were both very busy with American tourists.

Amalfi Coast is gorgeous. Can't wait to go back. We were there in March and were the only Americans in town. I would go again in spring or fall, but not during the crazy summer season.

so, since you're going in October, I would head for the Amalfi Coast. 3 days will give you time to relax & get in a day trip to Pompeii too!
