Italy itinerary advice
Message: We are going to Italy in October for 9 nights. How do you suggest we spend these 9 nights to make the most out of our trip? Main areas of interest are Rome, Riveria (would you suggest amalfi coast instead?)and Tuscany? Looking at hiring a car (would train be better?) and staying in 3* hotels.
Thanks

With only 9 nights, and SO MUCH to see, I'd suggest picking only two destinations...Rome and the Amalfi coast (you could include a side trip to Pompeii that way) or Rome and Tuscany. You don't need a car while in Rome, but it helps to get the most out of Tuscany. I'd suggest you fly in to Rome, pick up a car at the airport and drive to Tuscany. Chiusi or somewhere around there is a terrific spot and an easy drive. You could even stop in Orvieto for lunch or maybe even the first night, as it is a delightful town and just the right size to see your on your first day. Spend 3 or 4 nights in Tuscany to drive around visiting Montepulciano, Montelcino, Pienza (also a good spot to "base" in) Monteriggioni, Siena. (Save Florence for another trip.) Then drive back to the airport, turn in your car and take a cab into Rome where you will complete you vacation. Rome is astounding. You will have become accustomed to Italy in Tuscany, and really be able to enjoy Rome. Have fun planning your trip!

Good advice from uhoh. Except that I like to reverse it. Assuming you are doing a long flight in, I'd spend the first part in Rome, where I think it's easier to get your bearings, not deal with driving at the beginning, especially after a long flight, and being able to absorb the basic Italian lifestyle a little. Then get your car when you leave Rome to do either the Amalfi coast or Tuscany. If you aren't too far your final night and assuming your return flight isn't too early, you can leave your car off at the airport when you leave. Incidentally I think our car return there was easier than almost any US airport I've ever rented from.

October sounds like a perfect time. I think I'd opt for Amalfi, though. Later in the month Tuscany can certainly start being pretty cold (this from a Florida guy, understand).
