On the same theme, Robert is keen to deny that I saw what I saw by saying that I have never been to the event. Wrong Robert, but I'd never go again.

yes Robert is http://iberiantraveler.com/ and he is married to Maribel of Maribel’s Guides

Just for the record I am too involved with tourism in Spain. I am open about that as my website is in my profile.

For one thing...the running of the bulls has little to do with bull fighting. It´s a tradition, not than long though, that has become overpopular in the past few years. My dad went in the 60s and there were a few runners and a lot of joyful atmosphere. Now it´s full of foreigners that don´t really know where they are and are there just to drink to death. Bulls are not tortured during the running...and it´s just a 2 or 3´ race where many measures are taken to prevent any injuries to the bulls (mainly!!). So stop talking nonsense.

Ribe

You are honest and balanced in your approach and can I hardly remember a time when you did not mentioned your establishment in an understated and professional manner.

If we ever needed a place to stay in Galicia, I would be happy to stay at your place.

And I did not know he was married to Maribel. He needs a disclaimer on his posts.

"Are you also going to deny the ETA bombed a restaurant in Madrid and Barajas and two of the main train stations in Madrid back in the 1970's?"

No, there is a good record of the incidents! ETA is, and has always been, a terrorist organization, plain and simple, but they never bombed a restaurant in Pamplona in the 70s as you claim.

I was in Pamplona in '97 when ETA kidnapped Miguel Angel Blanco and murdered him in a field on 13 July. It was not a nice time.

For the record, my friend from Galicia, and IMD, my profile has always listed my business website, but unlike some, I do not promote it with every positing. By the way, renting rooms in a Casa Rural isn't quite the same as being involved in tourism.

The incident to which I was referring which I stated occurred "many years ago" was 1972-1973. Of course, you know better than I who was there.

And renting rooms in a Casa Rural with might not be as lucrative as you, but I am sure it is important to Ribe.

Robert

Your site does not specify with which hotels, airlines, restaurants, trinket shops, bodegas, tour guides, etc. you have a financial arrangement. That, of course, would be useful when you recommend any commercial establishment or relationship.

I have never seen Robert promoting his particular business.. only giving excellent advice here, as well as Ribe. His partner marble has always offered her fabulous PDF guides FREE to anyone interested.

However, perhaps "putting a bomb in " a restaurant is what happened.. not "bombing the restaurant". I was also here in the 70's and plenty of explosions were taking place, big and small, across the nation, even in Valencia ( maybe that was the 80's). hard to keep track.

That is the trouble Iberian traveller has suggested many times a poster looks at a certain person's guide.Like this one.

Maribel does not post on here now.
Robert seemingly got two posting names.

Maribel has not posted here in years. Her guides were extremely helpful, when they were.

When Robert recommends a hotel, do you know whether he has a business relationship with that establishment? Or conversely, if he steers someone away from a place, that something may have occurred between them?

And when he argues over points that he thinks may harm Spanish tourism, does it cross your mind, that he may be thinking of his commercial interests?

Frankly, whenever anybody on these boards uses the word property to describe a hotel, they are either in the business or pretentious.

I think many, perhaps most, local people without any interests in the tourist industry would react much the same way, probably much stronger, to the way some topics every now and then are discussed here. Not to say that it's no good to discuss street-crime or bullfighting on fodors, but I find Robert's views mostly very "Spanish"/local.

Kimhe

You knowledge of Spain on these boards is without parallel. But whatever your opinion, I feel there is no ulterior motive. And even though you have great affection for Spain, you know there are problems as well.

I have the pleasure to know "Robert" and Maribel personally (I´m a Basque local also involved in tourism). Their prestige on Fodors and other travel webs is well known and many people have followed their sound advice on places in Spain. I think these "attacks" on him are pointless, since they are just based on mere speculations and not a single evidence. You may disagree with his opinions, but you are free to ignore them.

That is point Mikelg, if they are in the tourist business a disclaimer would be appropriate.

Mike maybe read some of Robert's postings to see who is the poster who write the most indefensible posts.
Suggesting someone reads Maribel's website for tour suggestions is fine when it is free. But then that is like suggestion a Youtube channel (for example) and said channel links back to a business. It is a form of advertising. It is called SEO work. For those who do not know about how this increases traffic to a website please search on the subject.
