Ring Strasse
Will be arriving in Vienna late Saturday afternoon. How late does the tram on the ring run? Will be there two full days, good idea to get Vienna card at airport for transportation and discount for sites or just transportation? Staying at Pension Nossek.

It depends where you find the #1 or #2 streetcar ( strassenbahn on the Ringstrasse when the last car will pass - but best to think the last at midninght.
The #1 runs clockwise- the #2 the opposite way.
As you probably know they each make a complete circle around the Ring and deliver you back to the place you start if you wish.
The pension Nossek is on Graben, a pedestrian shopping street in the middle of the city.
Easy access by Bus 1A - stops almost in front
UBahn#1 and 3 nearby at Stephansdom.
The 72 Hour card is good for 72 hours of unlimited travel on Vienna City bus, streetcar UBahn and SBahn trainsfrom the time validated.
A regular 72 hour card costs 13,60 euro -
The Vienna Card also good for 72 hours and also provides discounts on various tickets to sightseeing - costs 18,50.
If you stay just 2 days it is probably better just to buy 24 hour cards for 5,70 euro.
Single ride is 1,70 euro.
The Vienna card is good if you plan a great amount of sightseeing. You can easily save the 5 euro added cost.
Please note that these cards are not valid for transfers from the airport to the city by airport transfer bus or CAT train. You pay separately for these.
The card is good for the portion of your transfer inside Vienna by the SBahn train an added ticket for the portion of the journey outside Vienna limits must be purchased -1,70 euro.
You can buy tickets at the information office in the Arrivals hall at the airport .
You can also buy Vienna transport cards on line

I find that the old center of Vienna is very walkable. When we were there in 2006, we pretty much walked everywhere with the exception of the Belvedere. Since Pension Nossek is right in the center, you may not benefit much from the transportation pass.

I do not agree with the above - the 24 hour card or another is very good to have.
The system in Vienna is safe, extensive and cheap.
Even in the city center - frequent bus service with 1A, 2A and 3A is very useful and convenient for quick transfers and tired tourists.
if you plan visits to Belvedere Palace, Schoebrunn palace , Liechtenstein Palace, the Prater and giant ferris wheel , the Danube River, outlying good restaurants, wine tavern areas such as Grinzing or others the pass is essential.
If a chance of shower or rain, the pass becomes even more important.
Should note - if you plan to visit in June- the Euro 2008 football matches will be played- much of the Ring will be closed to make a fan zone and streetcars for portions will be cancalled or re routed.

I answered your other questin regarding Euro 2008 and hope that information assisits you.
UBahn - the subway
SBahn - system of train routes both in Vienna and ouside its limits - local trains
not too many tourists use it as routes can be a little confusing to those not accstomed to using these trains - but a good fast eay to get to specific places in Vienna.
