can we expect our overnight train from Rome to Paris to make stops en route? it's a 13-hr ride.
we've never been to europe, much less taken an overnight train, so i don't know if it's direct and if all the passengers are headed to paris, or if some will be stopping in other cities and others boarding in other cities as we traverse the night.
also, is there a dining car?

The night train from Roma to Paris has sleeping cars, couchettes and a restaurant car (open for dinner and breakfast), but no ordinary seating. The only passengers using the train are people travelling overnight from Italy to France. It stops at Firenze, Bologna, Parma and Piacenza to pick up passengers, then in the morning stops to drop people off at Dijon and Paris. There will other stops to change engines and crew at the borders with Switzerland, but it does not pick up or drop off passengers in Switzerland.
The restaurant car has a limited choice for dinner, and there are usually sandwiches and other snacks available at the bar. Some people prefer to have a picnic in their compartment.
There are more descriptions and pictures of the trains on www.seat61.com.

Carrie, You and your aunt will be fine in a 2-person private compartment. Remember to go shopping at the market or bakery for the trip and bring on a nice picnic dinner, snacks, wine, water, whatever. There should be no worries about safety in a private cabin; you can lock the door.

Before I thought we may be taking a couple of overnight trains, now it looks like only one (Salzburg to Amsterdam). The train is an hour and a half/2 hours from Salzburg to Munich (8:30- around 10pm), then 10 hours from Munich to Amsterdam (arriving in Amsterdam around 8:45am) so we'll have a long enough distance than if we took a 6 hour overnight train. My aunt is 42, I'm 27 and we sleep like rocks (I've even fallen asleep at a concert before, so I'm sure a train will be fine!). Thanks for the idea regarding snacks and Tylenol PM! I'll be sure to bring those!
