Rhine Castle Hotels...HELP!!!

We are trying to decide whether to stay at Burg Reichenstein or Burg Stahleck on the Rhine. If anyone has any info or opinions on these places please let us know. We know Burg Reichenstein is more expensive but we are willing to pay if it is nicer than Burg Stahleck.
Thanks for your help!

Haven't stayed at either, but I have hiked up to Stahlek. I assume they have a car park, but if you are traveling by train, I'd hate to have to hike up to Stahlek w/bags. It is beautiful hike, but it would get old. Reichenstein may be just as much of a hike. When we were at Stahlek, there were a ton of children (and not many adults).
Hi! Didn't stay at either one of these (stayed at the Auf Schonburg in Oberwesel), but did a lot of looking at Richtenstein, which is a really neat place with a lot of antiques, including full suits of armor. There's a very good web page on Richtenstein at www.caltim.vstorehome.com.

Stahleck is a youth hostel -- which in Germany means that, at least when school is in session (through mid-July sometimes), there is a high probability that there will be hordes of school kids on a week-long field trip racing around, playing grab-ass, and screaming their lungs out. So if you want to stay in a castle that simulates an invasion by tribal warriors, this is the place.

Nickie,

Did you enjoy staying at Auf Schonburg in Oberwessel? Which do you think would be better this one or Burg Reichenstein?
I am staying at Burg Reichenstein in early July. I heard great things about Aug Schonburg, but they were booked when we are going. When are you going?
I posted a message about Burg Reichenstein back in March and never got a response. Will let you now when i get back.
GB

We were just in Bacharach and hiked up to Stahleck. There were many rowdy German teenagers about. If you don't have a car, the hike up is not horrible, but I wouldn't want to do it several times a day, or carrying bags or in the dark. I don't recall seeing any lights along the trail.

Sorry Natasha, I didn't notice you'd asked me a question. I never stayed overnight at Reichenstein, so it wouldn't be fair of me to compare. At a guess I'd say Auf Schonburg is more formal. I actually changed my date of arrival because my first choice of days was already booked - the hotel is not very big, and it is popular due to all the attention it gets from travel mags. The location was better for me too.
