Dragon,
This question has been asked many times recently. If you would do a Fodors search with the same question in the German section, you would get lots of ideas.
I recommend the Hotel-Cafe Post in Assmannshausen, about 7 kilometers from Rudesheim.

The Hotel Post I referred to is definitely in Rudesheim. The famous Drosselgasse sign is attached to the side of the hotel. The proprietor is Thomas Lauter and the building has been in his family for four centuries. He should know what town it is in.

Thanks everyone.
We're back now and can really recommend
Hotel Germania in Rudesheim, right next to Drosselgasse. Very clean and friendly and extensive breakfast buffet.
For those of you who thought I was cutting it fine I should add that when I asked the question I was still in my office and had a half hour drive home before leaving. Still, ever the optimist I expected husband and 4 kids to be all packed up and ready to go when I got home. As usual I was wrong!!
